Hrithik Roshan, just selected by Forbes among the half a dozen Bollywood actors who have a name in Hollywood, was delighted and surprised when he was recognized on the streets in the US while shooting for Kites. “That was a change. It makes me feel good to see our films are crossing borders. At a bank in the US when you’re withdrawing money you are delighted to realize that the person on other end of the counter knows who you are. Or salesgirls at shops…they recognize you and go, ‘Are you…? And when you tell them, they go, ‘Wow!’ …yeah it feels good.”

However, Hrithik is not courting international success with his first English-language film Kites. “I haven’t set any goals for myself as such. I just want to keep evolving as an actor and a person. That’s the only mission in my career. If Kites takes me international, I’ll be happy.”

Ironically, Hrithik Roshan’s Kites co-star Barbara Mori came to Mumbai and went without being recognized.

Says Hrithik, “We knew it would be safe to get her down because she had come to Mumbai last year and attended a fashion show with my wife Susanne, right there in front of the cameras. She was here for a week and went all over Mumbai without being recognized. Nobody bothered her. She walked the Fashion Street and no one bothered her. So we knew it was okay to get her over.”

    ritz,
Your very own over-anxiety over kites time and time again reinforces the claim that it is being eagerly awaited by even its detractors and is a certain BB in the making.

Apropos Imran khan,Credit goes to his ‘Wannabe’ Mamujaan who sold him as a “substitute Aamir” in JTYJN which successfully managed to delude the audiences. But the guy got badly exposed in his very next Movie kidnap.Delhi-Belly with its adult content and the impuissant Imran as the lead is destined to fail no matter how much hard he tries to ride on Mamujaan’s coattails.

Everything that Aamir does is a delusion. The guy has been pulling wool over our eyes for so long, especially since Lagaan, DCH, MP, Fanaa, TZP, JTYJN and Ghajini.

But there is a point to make about Kidanp. In fact after JTYJN I was quite happy with Imraan and thought a new force might emerge. But in Kidnap he was really bad, and matched the trashyness all around him. Since everyone and the film sucked, maybe Imraan needs to be given another decent chance.

I wud like to know what Hrithik means by going international … is he dreaming to play bond, or have big hollywood grossers or get hollywood projects ala pitt/cruise?

wtf does a indian star mean by going international?

I will say Indian media is delusional when they talk about news items with US and ‘international’ connection to India. They need to check Jay Leno’s JayWalking to recognize how less people know about US in general. India is very far on anyone’s plate. International News is like 2-5 minutes in any one hour news slot.

RKS – most people living in LA do not know that the US shares a border with Mexico 60 miles down the road!!

International may mean anything which is ex india. I do believe that Kites will not pander as much to the core American market (in the same way as say SDM did) but more to the minority segment including Hispanics, Mexicans, apart from the NRI population in the US. But then the interbational release will be largely focussed in the Latin American, Mexican and pan european markets.

Hrithik has downplayed the hype so far, which is good and as a strategy should continue to downplay it till before few months of its release. Movies with great hype can at times have counterproductive effect on the BO if the quality of the film does not meet the expectations of the audience.

On Imran – Haven’t seen any of his film to comment on him or his talent in handling an english language project, but it is a fact that JTYJN did ride on the Aamir Khan wave and Kidnap minus Aamir wave failed at the BO. Now one can say the latter was badly scipted, but the collinearity cannot be denied. In my view it is too early to make any predcitions about Imran as he is still young in the field. Whatever I saw of Ranbir and Imran at the FF, I am a lot more impressed by Ranbir so far. The guy is all confidence and charm.

agree with Julie. after watching jtyjn and sawariya – i thought imran will outpace ranbir. But having seen them at Filmfare – Imran just doesnt have the charisma that a Ranbir. What imran has though is Aamir’s hand behind him. But i see this going the SRK/Aamir way. Like SRK, Ranbir will be a much bigger star but Imran will have his own niche

Imran is not Aamir – the guy is in fact so different from all other film stars … very unpretentious and non-filmy. And that will be his strength in his career. Ranbir might be good with his charm but he is in standard mould.

The film with the biggest hype around is no doubt Kites. The naysayers can delude themselves all they want. Delhi Belly has hype? In fact any film of Ranbir has more hype right now than Delhi Belly – starting with Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahani and then Raajniti.

Incidentally the people who are predicting dooms for Kites will be the first to que up and watch the film – why – just to pan it net forums. The world is replete with charlatans.

I have no pretensions in saying that most of Akshay’s films this year will bomb and Delhi Belly has the least hype because frankly Imran does not impress. The only Akshay movie which is looking good on paper is Blue but I can trust Akshay to give this one a royal screw.

And this year I expect Ranbir to transcend into stardom. Abhishek had a chance with Delhi6 but lost it. I can see either Ranbir or Shahid capitalising on this lost opportunity. More so the former, beacause he is debonair, charming and full of confidence.

Isn’t that usually the case Julie? The ones who want to pan a film line up way before the fans do! And the films with no hype have neither the fans nor the haters lining up. How can anyone even imagine that Delhi Belly has more buzz than Kites? After Kidnap I have not much hope from Imraan – he was like a lost child in a film where he could have displayed energy and verve and taken the film by storm. Ranbir is on the exact opposite trajectory with Bachna Ae Haseeno. Ranbir got best debut awards for his flop debut, but numerous accolades from critics for his second successful film.

    ritz,
The more you talk on this, the more you commit!
The crux of the matter is that you are extremely alacritous to label kites as a “sure-shot disaster” inspite of the fact that you have no clue what the movie is all about or the money at which it has been made(like everyone else here including me).Even the first promo is yet to hit the screens. There is just no basis for your spurious claims on Kites. So do not expect us to accede to your unfounded self-opinionated assertions.Surely, once the promo is out,you (and a few here) will ludicrously masquerade that you hated it even if it happens to be the best promo ever!

It it crosses 60 Crores I will watch all Karan films.

    My estimate : Kites
    Opening – 35 Crores
Net Gross – below 50 Cr

    Delly Belly:
    Opening: 10 Crores
    Net Gross: 25 Crores.
This will be highest grossing English film from Bollywood in India.
Total for Delly Belly should be around 40+ Cr Nett worldwide.
