To check whether Amir and Shahrukh belong to the Sachin league, i worked around the cricket tradition, and complied a score card ad of quality. The only comprehensive dat I could get is IMDB user ratings. Not that they are infallible, not even that I agree with all of them, but since most of them are by over thousands of users, thee is some reflection of quality perception there. I have remove spl appearances and appearance as child actor.

This is the summary:

Sharukh: 51 films: Total rating: 319.5, Av: 6.26
Amir: 35 films: total rating: 203.5. av: 5.8

If we take only the last ten years ( 99-08):

Sharukh: 23 films. total: 151.8. Av: 6.6
Amir: 10 films. Total: 70.8 . av: 7.08

Scores above 8:

Sharukh : 3 ( Chak de India, Swades, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na)
Amir: 7 ( TZP, RDB, DCh, Lagaan, Andaz Apna Apna, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, QSQT)

Maximum rated Film:

Amir ( 2) ( Andaz Apna Apna (8.6), Jo Jeeta Wohi sikandar (8.6))

Now you guys can draw your own conclusions.

Clearly there is no difference in perception of quality in careers of both the actors…Secondly why should only last 10 years be considered??? If that would have been the case then AMitabh would have been a nonentity…The entire career has to be taken in to consideration….

Finally I care less about the critics as I am always a advocate of audince approval….

These are not critic’s ratings, but users’. Ten years’ ratings scorecard, is to give a sense of current form, but a lifetime scorecard is also provided.

Raj, not really. Box Ofice collection is not an indicator of a film being liked. Take for example, CCTC might have earned 30 crores and Bheja Fry 10 crores. That does not mean that CCTC was liked more than Bheja Fry. It is quite possible 80% of people who saw CCTC hated it. Box office figure represent the number of people who saw it, not who liked it.

If that was not the case why the need for users’ rating? why do you think the best film list is not based on box office earnings, but on users’ ratings. ( Of course no ratings can reflect how much a film has been liked exactly, but still users’ ratings if the sample is large, are a fair indicator, the best that we have.)

Street, as I disclaimed the ratings may not match what you feel, or what I feel,( I rate Lagaan highest in the oeuvres of both these actors.) , but that is not the point. If thousands of viewers have rated them thus, so be it for our study.

IMDb ratings are hardly an indicator of a film’s critical appeal. They are user ratings and the BO is a much better indicator of this appeal. In the Bheja Fry vas CCTC example I would say that many of the people for saw CCTC liked it (I know I was among them) and many who saw Bheja Fry were put off by the frame for frame ripoff (I know I was)! Unless we take exit polls such conjectures are really quite silly.

DDLJ is less liked that QSQT? On what planet is that happening? And IMDb final ratings are NOT an average of user ratings – rather special emphasis is given to the IMDb top 1000 voters.

They overall career of these actors is quite illuminating – no wonder Aamir woke up to the fact that he needed to stop dishing out crap and start doing better films! But then he is in a comfort zone now and acting in films like Fanaaa and Ghajini – so every forward step is accompanied by more backward movement. The next few years should be interesting!

As for BO, Aamir had a total of 4 clean hits in his entire career prior to 2006…. a total of 18 freaking years. QSQT, Dil, RH and Lagaan.

yeah he did have 3-4 above average and semi-hits but that’s it. Hardly anything to write home about. look at it this way.. Akshay has delivered almost as many hits in a 20 month period that took Aamir his 20 year career.

    Utkal,

Still I strongly feel BO is the only criteria to gauge audinces’ likes or dislikes…You can’t take the total BO gross in isolation for sure…Every other factor has to be factored in..It is WOM of a movie and this can be seen from BO trendings and collections. For Example” a wednes days” has good WOM and it reflected in its week to week collections..Same goes for CCTC when it comes to negative WOM.

Secondly how many people know about IMDB…To be very honest I have never beet to this site and so as my freinds…It can’t form a representitive sample for sure…

For me BO is the only criteria. I don’t care about what a critics or IMDB kind of sites say…

Raj, for you box office criteria may be the biggest criteria, but for the world it is not.( I have explained the dynamics of why it is so. For example, lkahs of people went to se Delhi 6, because of the track record of Mehra, RDB and the superlative music. *0% of them did not like the film. The attendance is reflected in BO returns. Their dislike is not.) If you were looking to rent a DVd, would you look at the Biggest BO list, or the IMDB Top 250 list? OS and Rab Ne are the BO toppers among Sharukh’s films. Have they been liked more than Chak De India, Swades and DDLJ?

If you believe that, you are welcome. My list is for those who believe that Mard might have earned more than Deewar, but Deewar is more liked.

That Amir did some real crappy films in the first 10 years of his carer is not in question. But look at where he is now. Amitabh had 12 flops in row in the early stage of his career. So? It’s not about where you start from. But where you reach.

utkal – if u consider inflation and cost of capital – DDLJ, Deewar etc earned more. Granted BO is not the only indicator but so isnt user reviews. And finally movie are so personal in a way – all these things dont matter and you cant judge them by metrics. I believe Swades and Kabhi haan kabhi naa is better than any movie that Aamir has done. But at the same time the movies I would love to watch over and over again are QSQT and Jo Jeeta..No one may agree with that – but what do i care? So to me – this is a pointless discussion..

Beld, quoting frong from BOI, Sanyasi and Dus Numbari have earned more than Deewar in the same year. Even after inflation adjustment, Mard has earned more than Zanjeer ( 52cr vs 49cr)and double that of Mr India ( 27cr). And I am yet to meet a single person who has liked Mard. Your likng QSQT and Jo Jeta is perfectly understandable. many others do. And again many others dont. That’s why users base of over thousands is some kind of an average. Not prefect. But something to go by.

Nowhere in the world when they discuss the greatest movies , IMDB, Sight and Sound, Time,…no one bases their survey on the Box Office. Many go by critics. Many go by viewers. But Box Office is never taken as the barometer of viewer’s liking.

And I am using IMDB, because it’s the only one available with some kind of data. And its users are closest to NG in terms of demographic profile ( Net users, English speaking, somewhat aware of cinema outside of Bollywood.)

utkal – I would say that for someone who truly cares about the best of world cinema – IMDb is about 3 years behind the curve now. It is at a point where any newest release is an instant fad and bumped into the top 250 while some classic “must see” is bumped off the list. This might have something to do with the changing demographic of the net savvy movie viewers getting younger and younger. Most would have gone to Rottentomatoes 1-2 years ago, but now the favored site is Metacritic.

I am not saying they did not work at the box office. What I am saying is that they are not the Top 25 in the Box office chart. Pulp fuction and Fight Club are small box office sucesses compared to the biggest hits of those years. Just like Bheja Fry, Dev D or Satya are in the Bollywood context.

Here are the Top 25 in box office terms. By the way the very topper in Box office Titanic, is nowhere in the Top 25.

On a budget of 25 million USD The Shawshank Redemption grossed 28 million USD. Both of these are not successes. ( Just to give you a perspective, Slumdog , made on a budget of 15 milllion, already has a domestic gross of 100 million and worldwide gross of 160 million.)
