MUMBAI: Even as Slumdog Millionaire continues to create waves across the globe and readies for the Oscars, the movie has picked up pace at the Indian box office after a medium start. At the end of its second week run, Slumdog has grossed Rs 215 million (Rs 21.50 crores) in India.
Fox Star Studios expects Slumdog to gross approximately Rs 300 million (Rs 30 crores) from India. “Honestly speaking, the movie’s performance has exceeded our expectations. Going by the demand, we expect it to gross at least Rs 300 million at the box office. Moreover, it is also very gratifying from the cinema point of view as it shows that at least the audience is willing to go and watch different genre of films,” Fox Star Studios CEO Vijay Singh tells Businessofcinema.com.
Slumdog Millionaire’s worldwide box office collections till date stand at Rs 5.30 billion (Rs 530 crores) and India’s Rs 215 million contributes about four per cent to it.

Top 5: ‘Raaz TMC’ & ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ have bountiful 1st week
B.O. update: Another thanda week, tally of flops rises
Post RAAZ – THE MYSTERY CONTINUES and SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, the business continues to go downhill. Last week’s LUCK BY CHANCE and VICTORY opened to dull and dismal houses, respectively and this week’s DEV D had a 25% – 35% start at select screens, while the opening was much lower at others. The reports are negative and a decline in business was noticed on Day 1 itself. The general feedback is that the film is not likely to sustain.
The other two releases, MERE KHWABON MEIN JO AAYE and CHAL CHALA CHAL, have opened to a disastrous response. The opening was 5%, at places even lower. It would be an achievement if these two films manage to complete an entire week’s run

Raaz 2 has crashed and SDM is not doing well either.
btw are the collections of Ghajini incomplete? It seems to have dropped by an average 80% in the key centers in it’s 6th week. The film which had a steady 5th week can’t fall to this extent in the next week.

Dev D Does Fair First Day Business
Dev D has managed to tot up fair business on its first day in terms of nett business. The seat utilisation is low but it has been released on 500 cinemas which is huge for this type of film and this has enabled to film gross a reasonable 1.40 crore nett on day one.
The figure is more commendable as the terms with the multiplexes were settled very late and therefore its release ads did not appear in entertainment ads which led to the public not being aware of release at multiplexes.
There are some badly informed sources in the trade who believe the collections declined on day one but the truth is that collections were lowest in the morning shows and improved throughout the day with late shows having the highest collection at most places around the country.
It will be interesting to see what happens over the weekend and if the film can manage over 5 crore nett business it would a fairly good result for the film considering the cost of the film.

What Is Likely Opening And Fate For Billu Barber?
Q. Is Raaz 2 still a hit after it crashed in week two and how does it compare to Emraan’s last hit Jannat?
A. The business of Raaz – The Mystery Continues will be similar to Jannat but costs of Jannat were much lower. Raaz – The Mystery Continues will do semi hit business of around 14 crore share from India.
Kunal Nilawer
Q. Which film is the best bet for Akshay Kumar this year?
A. De Dhana Dhan in India and Kambhakkt Ishq overseas.
Asif Ahmed
Q. Is Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi the biggest grosser ever for Yashraj Films?
A. In terms of nett gross it is the highest but distributors shares of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Dhoom 2 were higher.
Dilip Gupta
Q. What is the likely opening and fate for Billu Barber?
A. Hard to say, opening could be better at single screens due to SRK presence and hit music but the multiplex audience knows it’s an Irfan Khan film so it may have to depend on being liked by the multiplex audience for good box office collections.

Dev D Grosses Around 5.50 Crore Over Weekend
Dev D has managed reasonable business of nearly 5.50 crore nett over the weekend. The film managed to do its best business at select multiplexes of Mumbai and Delhi/NCR. The business is fair as costs are low and the film has a limited audience.
The breakdown was 1.40 crore on Friday, 1.75 crore on Saturday and 2.25 crore on Sunday which shows collections did not decline on day one as suggested by some sources. The first week should finish around the 7.50 crore nett mark which would be a decent result for the film.

Dev.D, Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye and Chal Chala Chal, were the three releases last week. While CCC and MKMJA carshed miserably, Dev.D to some extent managed to hit the spot.
BO Collections
Dev.D, Anurag Kashyap’s modern day adaptation of Saratchandra’s famous novel opened with 25-30% collections for the first show. It saw poor collections at single screens. Word of mouth saw a rise in collections in select multiplexes of Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad. The day ended with around Rs 1.5 crore net collections.
The weekend collections were good in many multiplexes across different cities. The first three days’ net collections for Dev.D was approximately Rs 5.50 crore. Trade sources are forecasting around Rs 8 crore net collections for the first week, which is definitely good for a medium-budgeted film.
The opening weekend collections in major multiplexes across the country were – Cinemax 55-60%, PVR 60-65%, Fame 60-70%, Fun Cinemas 60% and BIG Cinemas 55-60%.

Midweek: ‘Dev D’ fair at handful of plexes, overall disappointing!
Dev.D: The film has had a fair weekend at a handful of multiplexes. Most major players [multiplexes] this writer spoke to have confirmed that the film has had a decent weekend at very, very few plexes, at very few big centres only. The youth in Mumbai and Delhi mainly have liked the film, but the numbers are clearly missing. Monday witnessed a big fall even at those plexes. Overall, disappointing!

Som,
out of those 12 flops its difficult to understand certain things..
Tashan Budget 40 cr..in Ndia it collected 30 cr and then how it made a loss of 30 cr to the producres if we take all other revenues in to account.Same for JBJ and LCMD…
Som 9 February 2009

Raj: Tashan’s total cost including the prints and publicity will come around 50cr I guess. As per BOI it did 28cr in India which will give Yash Raj a share of 14-15cr.Overseas was bad, Yash Raj’s share will be around 2-3cr. So It comes to 17-18cr recovery from India and overseas theatrical collections. Then you can add the revenue from Satellite, Music and some other rights.Satellite nor Dvd rights will add any significant as It was a rejected film.

Dev D Adds One Crore Approx On Monday
Dev D has taken its nett total to around 6.50 crore in four days by grossing around ome crore nett on Monday. The film managed fairly good collections on Monday which were less than 30% lower than its Friday figures. The film was best in Bangalore with over 70% collections on Monday.
Dev D is also faring well in Mumbai/Thane, Pune, Delhi NCR, Chandigarh and Kolkata. The film should cross the 8 crore nett mark in its first week.

A few misconceptions…
A 4 and 5 star rating by reviewers doesn’t imply that the film is a ‘Hit’ at the cash counters. Both are two different things. Let me explain.
Film reviews are out — in print and on television channels and also on web — on Friday itself and even though the first day may not have come to a close, a film-maker starts calling his/her film a success only because a reviewer or two has been overtly generous with star ratings in the review.
Turning a blind eye [ignorant?] to the box-office numbers, the film-maker starts calling up his friends and well-wishers, “Apni picture Hit ho gayee yaar.” This, even before the first show has commenced at plexes/single screens. Most film-makers don’t even bother to check with various distributors across the country as to how the film is behaving in various circuits.
The question is, is the film-maker ready to face the truth?
Misconception 2… It’s about the numbers provided by distributors/exhibitors to the media. When a distributor/studio claims their film has done a business of Rs. 45 crores in its opening weekend, most media persons as also the aam aadmi reading the news assume that the entire amount [Rs. 45 crores] has gone into the distributors’ pockets.

fter creating a buzz among audiences with its grunge soundtrack and promos, Anurag Kashyap’s Dev D, a modern take on Devdas, struck gold at the box office by raking in Rs.95 million at the opening weekend.
The inclusion of real life cases like the MMS scandal at Delhi Public School and the BMW hit and run accident in the movie is luring the audiences, say film experts.
Dev D has proven its mettle by pulling in audiences in hordes – especially youngsters. The film has selling material in terms of content. Incidents like the DPS MMS scandal, the BMW case and colloquial language has further led to its triumph at the box office,” Joginder Mahajan, a Delhi-based distributor, told IANS.
Releasing after a dull week that saw Luck By Chance and Victory, Kashyap’s film opened to positive reviews and was houseful at the weekend. Produced by UTV Spotboy and Bindass, Dev D stars Abhay Deol with newcomers Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin.
Girish Johar, associate vice-president of UTV Motion Pictures, said: Dev D is one of our premium products and it has managed to generate a very good hype among our target audience (youth). We are hoping it will have a long run at the box office.”
Kashyap’s contemporary take on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s classic novel has sidelined simultaneous releases Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aaye and Chal Chala Chal.
“The other two releases Mere Khwabon? and Chal Chala Chal have been total failures. They are only gap fillers,” said Mahajan.
Mere Khwabon?, which has Arbaaz Khan, Randeep Hooda and Raima Sen in the lead, was snubbed by the audiences and couldn’t garner more than five percent collection. Helmed by debutante director Madhureeta Anand, the film has been co-produced by PVR Pictures and Madhureeta’s company Ekaa Films Pvt Ltd.
The budget for Dev D and Mere Khwabon? was the same. The producers invested around Rs.60 million excluding the publicity costs. In terms of prints, Dev D was released on more than 300 screens globally, Mere Khwabon? hit around 200 screens.
“As for Mere Khwabon?, it was a non-starter since the beginning and had zero buzz about it. The movie opened to empty houses and the weak content only made it worse. Ditto for Chal Chala Chal that was a fringe release,” said a source from Mumbai.
Govinda starrer Chal Chala Chal, which was directed by T.K. Rajeev Kumar, too failed to impress the movie buffs. The producers of Chal Chala Chal refused to divulge any details regarding the movie that released after a deferred delay of about two years since 2007.
Dev D is all set to be the second big hit of 2009 after Raaz – The Mystery Continues. It breaks the very stereotype of the legend of Devdas and that is where it scores the winning goal,” added the source.
On the whole, Dev D has fair business chances till Shah Rukh Khan starrer Billu and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi-6 hit the screens Feb 13 and Feb 20, respectively.

Ten Releases Five Disasters
The year 2009 has been a disaster at the box office, there have been ten releases and five of them Bad Luck Govind, Kaash Mere Hote, Victory, Chal Chala Chal and Mere Khwabon Me Jo Aaye are complete disasters having lost practically all their investment. We can add Chandni Chowk To China to this list as well, although its India theatrical business was not a complete washout due to reasonable start, the losses incurred by the worldwide distributors Warner Brothers were very big.
Even Raaz – The Mystery Continues which is the biggest success of the year so far did not do the the sort of business expected after its good initial four day weekend.
There are two biggies in the next two weeks in Billu and Delhi 6 and after that it will be a flow of low-mid budget releases till the end of May when the much awaited Akshay Kareena starrer Kambhakkt Ishq is due.

All Time Blockbuster GHAJINI completes 50 days
GHAJINI, which released on the evening of Wednesday, 24th December, completes 50 days at the box office today.
Though the film was earlier supposed to arrive on limited paid previews (which are generally restricted to the last show of the day at select multiplexes in metros), such high was the euphoria around the Aamir Khan starrer that number of such shows was increased. Ultimately, the number increased to such an extent that paid previews began early in the evening itself, hence officially making Wednesday as the day of arrival for the film.
As the film enters into its 8th week tomorrow, GHAJINI continues to do quite well in theaters, something which is reflected in the box office figures which continue to talk the language of crores. Bringing in 1 crore even in it’s sixth week, the film stood at 114 crores at the end of six weeks and should be closer to the 115 crore mark at the end of its theatrical run.
All eyes are now set on Aamir Khan’s next major release THREE IDIOTS which arrives in Aamir Khan’s patented slot now, Christmas, especially after the superb success of first TAARE ZAMEEN PAR (2007) and now GHAJINI (2008) which arrived in the same festive season. While DHOBHI GHAAT too will arrive before THREE IDIOTS, it isn’t quite a bona fide Aamir Khan film since other youngsters are expected to dominate the screen space.
On the other hand, RAB NE BANA DI JODI has done excellently for itself in its nine week running. Entering its 10th week tomorrow, the film will end around 87 crores in an overall run. The film is far lesser expensive than last few Shah Rukh Khan starrers like OM SHANTI OM, CHAK DE INDIA and DON – THE CHASE BEGINS AGAIN and has still done far better business. Looking at the results, this film too deserves an All Time Blockbuster considering the relatively lower cost that it has been made.
