THE YEAR 2008 saw many new comers. So it seems choosing the best debutant award for this year is very difficult. With the Khan Trio already forty plus, Akshay Kumar also touching forty, Hrithik Roshan is the only established superstar who is below forty. So Bollywood was looking out for some more stars who can carry the torch for a longer run.
Now let us see some of the contenders for the future superstars. This time his find was Anurag Sinha. Completing the course from FTII, he made his debut with Black and White. Even while sharing screen with veteran actor Anil Kapoor, he made his mark in the movie.
Besides these heroes, there are other heroes like Ranbir Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh who had made their debuts in 2007. Neil Mukesh made his mark with his acting skills in Johny Gaddar while Ranbir Kapoor became very popular among the mass even though his debut Saawariya was a flop. Shahid Kapoor, now 27, also has been around for half a decade.
Now we have to see among these who become the Gen X superstar. Some of them like Imran Khan, Farhan Akhtar made a mark among mass having box office hits but some other stars like Anurag Sinha, Neil Mukesh impressed with their acting. Harman Baweja has to come out of the Hrithik Roshan clone image if he really has to stay here for longer span. But one thing is sure; Bollywood is a bit relaxed to find so many contestants for future superstars.
If the audience is lover of romantic movies, then Imran Khan was the debutant of the year. He wowed everyone with his lover boy image in Jaane tu..ya jaane na. The star son is a common term in our industry. With Imran, we got a star nephew who captured the minds of the entire youth just like his uncle Aamir did with Qayamat se Qayamat tak. Though Imran’s second film Kidnap bombed, still there is no doubt about his talent. Jaane tu.. was one of the biggest hits of the year.
Though Love story 2050, the other movie that shared the release date with Jaane tu.. bombed at the box office, its hero Harman Baweja made some impression with his dances. However, many consider him the clone of Hrithik Roshan. Hence to see whether he can make a mark or not, we have to wait and watch.
The biggest surprise of the year was Farhan Akhtar. A director turning actor is not a common thing now a days. So one didn’t know exactly what to expect from his debut Rock On but after the release of the film, people were really thrilled to see the movie. Farhan proves his mettle in all accounts.
If we think small screen heroes are misfits for movies then we are wrong. Once we see the movie Aamir starring Rajeev Khandelwal, we will realize the potential of the star who is also known as Sujal in Indian households. With Aamir he showed his variety in acting. Though the movie was not meant for the masses, still it managed to make a mark in the box office. People are really excited to see him again on screen.
Subhash Ghai has been known for discovering stars.

When Big B was forty plus he was still rocking and nobody was talking about age or successors. He was even being refered to as the angry middle-aged man! Why at just forty three an actor is already aging? Why such funny double standards?
