Indore barometer indicates quite some fall in collections after the weekend.
Comment by sv on 21 November 2008:
Looks like a 28-30 crore opening week gross is possible for dostana.

Estimation based upon Indore parameter:
Weekend collections ~ 2015700
weekdays collection~864000
Weekday/weekend %~~42.8%
SO if weekend =16.5
Weekdays=7.07
SO First week=23.57 CR
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
^ And if we go by 20 crores weekend Net then week 1 is 28.5 crores.
The main issue will be how well it trend from week 2.
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
25-26 cr is on the higher side if we go by BOI’s weekend gross i.e 16.5 cr and the data we had for Indore which did show a fall of more than 60% in the weekdays. It should have been in between 22-23 cr in this case. But yes if we go by what Taran claimed i.e 18-20 cr in the weekend, a first week of 25-26 cr is indeed possible.
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Dostana has collected around 11 crore nett from the Mumbai circuit. East Punjab has grossed around 2.50 crore nett and CI added 60 lakhs.
The first week business should come in around 25-26 crore nett when figures of the other circuits come in.
Multiplexes in Mumbai, Pune Delhi/NCR and Bangalore are best while single screens have performed very badly as the film was released on 400 digital screens in week one and that is down to just 110 in week two. A loss of nearly 300 screens.
Comment by rks on 21 November 2008:
Som: You hit the nail with 16.5 & 18-20
. Though I must add that Indore is not correct barometer for all India (for Dostana). If we see the movie is doing good in multiplexes and badly in single screens (Taran also said similarly) then a better gauge of fall would be any A-metropolitan city.
Comment by beld on 21 November 2008:
How has yuvraj opened? The reviews are pretty entertaining even tho the movie has been trashed
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Rks, Indore is one of the biggest centers in India. And most of the time BOI has provided data for other movies, You can easily guess what would be the first week judging by the performance in the weekend and weekdays. In case of Dostana, the weekdays in Indore showed a big fall which led me to generalize that the first week can never be 25-26cr given the weekend was 16.5 cr.
Comment by Qalandar on 21 November 2008:
I’ve never been to Indore, but my understanding from NG and my Bhopal-based cousins had been that because of the large number of colleges in Indore and a more vibrant economy, that Indore had a bunch of multiplexes/”up-market” single screens. In many ways I feel the “upwardly mobile” cities (i.e. cities which have seen very good times economically of late, and are attracting professionals) like Nagpur, Hyderabad, are the biggest growth area for the entertainment sector. I would have put Indore in that category too…
Comment by rks on 21 November 2008:
Agree there Q. My comment was more of % of total population which is multiplex (upwardly mobile) oriented.
Comment by jayshah on 21 November 2008:
Dostana is a flop on BOI. Indore it is falling each day by X%. Compared to GR it is worse off. Also losing 300 screens is shocking. Has the BO ever seen such dastardly falls ever?

Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Som, while BOI will never be my guide for films (especially an Abhishek starrer) Indore is actually not a big market at all. The biggest centers going by city are Bombay (by far the largest), Delhi, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Calcutta. Not necessarily in that order. Bombay usually grosses twice the amount Delhi does and can sometimes be three times as much (almost). Delhi usually doubles Ahmedabad though Pune and Bangalore are now more or less in the Ahmedabad group for many films. Hyderabad is close but still there’s a difference and Calcutta is again a bit behind. But when you then go to Indore you see quite a drop.
I just don’t buy the Indore barometer idea. The territory it is a part of is pretty much negligible at this point. It probably indicates a certain degree of trending but I am suspicious about the fact that BOI are only using this and really giving daily numbers.
And I have a hard time believing that the media in general would be calling it a hit (earlier than BNB!) if it weren’t superb in multiplexes in key centers. Because if a film is going to really tank during weekdays I think this would be reflected in WOM over the weekend itself and people wouldn’t be rushing to call it a success. Saawariya opened stupendously but despite all the planted news stories no one called it a success once the weekend was over.
Anyway let’s see what the Fri numbers are. The single screens are not an issue here. Johar’s movies either underperform in these or are total flops. And Dostana’s theme made it a foregone conclusion in these places. The multiplexes are what we’re looking at and there have to be big numbers obviously in those major cities.
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
At the very least there is not a single media source at this point where the commentary reflects BOI’s. I suspect there’s some damage control being practised here. If you suggest it’s good in certain centers and a disaster everywhere you can perhaps justify a lower end total!
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Not that I’m going to debate this over the weekend or whatever. Jay’s calculations will be good enough for me. If he says 25 crores so it is.
Comment by rks on 21 November 2008:
IBOS - Box Office: Yuvraj fails to get an initial; Dostana slows after big week.
“After an impressive opening week run, Dostana saw consistent drops at the start of its 2nd week Friday. Collections have come down over 60% in places.”
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Now this is a sensible report though I certainly don’t expect KANK-like trending here for the simple reason that I don’t sense KANK-like WOM here! I think they might be looking at advance figures and these are increasingly deceptive these days beyond week 1 because people know that tickets will easily be available given the screen count. For example JA performed better every week than IBOS expected. Still for now let’s see what week 1 brings in.
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Satyam: That is exactly what I was saying.BOI’s commentaries in all these days just do not really justify a higher total (25-26cr) for Dostana considering BOI had a weekend gross of 16.5 cr.Even if you say Indore is exactly not a big center in India and can’t be taken as a barometer for all India, the collections BOI puts up there have come from 4 leading multiplexes where Dostana is supposed to be doing the best and there we see the collections falling by close to 60% in the in weekdays.Assuming every multiplexes in other metros and big centers more or less performed same as Indore in the weekdays,a 25-26 cr is on the higher side unless few big centers have done really well over the weekdays which will be enough to balance things out in favor of a reasonable all India fall in the weekdays. But considering IBOS’s report which is also claiming of a 60% fall,I believe the collections have indeed dropped over the weekdays and the weekend must have been lot more than what BOI quoted if at all we are going for a 25-26 cr or may be more in the first week.

one can follow jay’s bo report as a close to accurate one except for abhishek movies. for those - jay just cant control himself
btw - whats the deal on yuvraj opening? one more flop for salman. just look at this cheesehead’s record in last 2 years
jaaneman - flop
salaam-e-ishq - disaster
partner - super hit
marigold - disaster
god tussi great ho - flop/disaster
hello - average to flop
heroes - flop
yuvraj - flop(?)
i cant see why producers cast him - he defines the word ‘has-been’

B.O. update: ‘Yuvvraaj’ 40% - 60% start, ‘Dostana’ 1st wk nett 28 cr
Subhash Ghai’s ambitious fare YUVVRAAJ started well in the morning shows. The shows in parts of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and NCR were almost packed, but the noon shows showed a decline as the film performed in the 40% - 60% range. The film picked up during the evening shows, but it remains to be seen where it tilts on Saturday and Sunday. YUVVRAAJ is crucial for both, Ghai and Salman Khan, who’ve been facing rough weather professionally.
Meanwhile, last week’s DOSTANA was rock-steady on Friday, the first day of its second weekend. The trade is hopeful that the business will be strong on Saturday and Sunday as well. The first week nett [India] is approx. Rs. 28 crores [as per Dharma Productions]. Fantastic!
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Beld:Take Heroes and Hello out of that list,It will be fine.
Comment by beld on 21 November 2008:
wow 28 cr for dostana - thats well above everyone’s projections. with yuvraj being a turkey - dostana could prove a good money spinner. finally one hit for abhishek - he was in danger of going the salman way. that wud have been sad as he is a better actor by far compared to salman.
som - why is taran so positive on yuvraj? ghai ne chai pilaya kya?
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Beld: Taran seems to be upbeat about every big films these days excluding the products from Yash Raj(RNBDJ might also face the burn as well
).Don’t know if he is having a coffee or tea with the respective production houses.
BTW it is good to be upbeat in the period of recession(Drona, Kidnap,Heroes,Karzz, GR).

Top 5: ‘Dostana’ rocks at plexes, ‘Dasvidaniya’ affected
1 Dostana Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar Is excellent at multiplexes, but dull at single screens. The youth has taken to the film in a big way. 2nd week opening was rock-steady at plexes. 1st week nett: approx. Rs. 28 cr. 8,17,556 New
2 Ek Vivaah… Aisa Bhi Kamal Kumar Barjatya, Rajkumar Barjatya, Ajit Kumar Barjatya Is steady on the lower side 96,733 4
3 Dasvidaniya Azam Khan, Vinay Pathak Picked up over the weekend, but was largely affected by ‘Dostana’ 61,589 New
4 Golmaal Returns Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd India box-office performance has been very good, but in terms of pricing [approx. Rs. 45 cr.], it’s an average fare for its principal distributors Indian Films/Studio 18. 60,594 1
5 Fashion Ronnie Screwvala, Madhur Bhandarkar Slides downwards as well. Price-wise, average 59,856 2

pretty ironic statement eh…
Comment by beld on 21 November 2008:
btw all this talk abt boi being inaccurate is all BS. BOI along with Jog gives the most accurate numbers out there for Indian BO. all right minded people know that. BOI commentary of late sucks esp for bachchan movies - most right minded people know that too. But to make a case that Jay or IBOS is more accurate is ridiculousness at its peak. Fox news anyone..
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
^^ Agree with Beld once again.
28 crores week 1 is very good … my estimations was on the mark!
BOI gave a rough estimation last night of 25-26 crores … that is not too much off the mark … they are yet to give the final estimation.
ps - BOI and Taran usually gives the same Net.
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Beld: I think you’re being very unfair to Jay..
Som: exactly my thoughts.. i.e. on the Johar/Yashraj thing.. I know of course that Johar is let’s say usually on the right side of the media. But whatever happened to Yahsraj? They couldn’t even get kind reporting for a TRRP which did rather decently!
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Beld:You have said it.BOI is fine as long as it does not have to do anything with the “Bachchans”.IBOS of course does not make sense at all.Jay is the most consistent of the lot and I can add Rudresh there as well,at least you can figure out what they are doing and can expect to be answered once you throw a query back at them.
I was looking at an old thread,I guess that was Joginder’s BO report where he has come up with the same total for “Fashion” as of BOI(19 cr)despite of him quoting Taran’s numbers which were wrong for the Delhi city and Noida. How come one following Taran’s numbers for “Fashion” can come up with a lower total? It is just not possible unless there are some errors in the mathematical calculations.Even Rudresh whose numbers most of the times match to that of BOI, arrived at a much higher range for Fashion taking the help of Taran’s numbers.I have always wanted to ask Joginder about this.
Comment by beld on 21 November 2008:
btw ach - whats ur final no for dostana - 55cr?
i was looking at the line up of movies - there is really nothing out there for next few weeks. rnbdj and ghajini should milk it IMO. i guess other producers are too scared to release against the 2 Khans.
btw - SRK may well have released BB now. I think it would have out performed Yuvraj in a big way - wud have been a fitting answer to Mayur Salman Khan
sattu - i have maintained my stand on Jay right from the start and he knows that

Some of Taran’s numbers are a bit odd though.. I wonder if Bombay’s complete.. he has 6.15 crores for Bombay and close to 4 crores for Delhi. I’ve never seen such a low differential between the two!
In fact many other numbers here seem incomplete as well. Bangalore and Indore are practically the same number. Pune and Goa are also definitely incomplete. Chennai as well (if Ajmer is 4 lakhs Chennai can’t be 6! even otherwise this number is low looking at other films in Chennai). In any case the print average is very high at 8.17 lakhs for a film that is supposedly poor in single screens. All the more reason that these multiplex numbers should be whoppers.
In any case, Jay won’t have an easy job here. LOL!
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
Taran has something against GR from the beginning too .. he has used all sorts of theory to downplay GR’s Hit status.
Also agree with Beld that Jay gives a lenient higher range for Abhishek’s movies than he wud permit for any other star’s release barring Aamir (but in case of Aamir he is usually aware of his biasness so it gets neutralized to some extent) … and I am not refering with Guru here! (Guru i believe did around 50 crores or so in India… and yes i was reluctant to accept it for a long time).
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
It now remains to be seen how strong the youth factor is going forward for the film. Because it doesn’t have a wide enough net here to just do decently with certain segments and better with others. It has to be super with youth audiences!
of course the media narrative on this film was settled after 2-3 days. Everyone in every single source (barring BOI) calling it an outright hit.
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
“btw ach - whats ur final no for dostana - 55cr?”
I think it should get to 50-55 crores unless it tanks in the second weekend.
Btw, the Indore barometer seems to be quite indicative as Dostana did 20 crores or so in the weekend and just 8 crores or so in the weekdays … thats some fall.
GR has CRASHED in week 3!
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
Very good collections here for Dostana. Mumbai,Delhi,Gurgaon and Noida have put up some great numbers.Kolkata and Jaipur seem to be on the lower side.Pune and Bangalore have incomplete numbers, the centers where Dostana was supposed to be doing the best.

Achilles: But Jay had 50 crores for Guru only as his upper limit. Also I don’t think anyone really disagrees here with his numbers on say CDI or TZP or JA or whatever. Not sure where the bias is apparent. What Abhishek films has he privileged. He’s calling SR below average. The range also does not seem out of the ordinary. Every other Abhishek movie since has done terribly (LCMD or JBJ, we don’t even need to discuss Drona). So not sure what one could point out.
Anyway I’m off for now.. will catch up later..

Yuvraaj Opens Poorly Dostana Scores In Multiplexes
Yuvraaj has opened to a poor response at most multiplexes. Single screens in CPCI Rajasthan are better but the costs of the films need multiplexes to score. Multiplex opening was 30-35% while single screens were at 50-55%. The reports are not encouraging so box office office success looks difficult.
Dasvidaniya is poor and grossed 1 crore nett in its first week. FLOP
Deshdrohi is a success in Bihar but poor elsewhere. Week One business was around 70 lakhs.
Dostana has done well at multiplexes in the metroes. Multiplexes at other centres are fair while single screens are poor. As expected the film has fared best in Mumbai and Mysore. The film grossed around 25 crore in week one and is steady on its 8th day at multiplexes of Mumbai, Delhi/NCR and Bangalore.
Ek Vivah… Aisa Bhi is steady at places in Bihar, CP Berar and Rajasthan as it grosses around 55 lakhs in week two taking its two week total to 1.75 crore.
Golmaal Returns takes its three week total to 52.50 crore. HI
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Som, Calcutta is lower if that number is complete and it might be here. Jaipur is fine. Actually I think it’s quite good for this sort of film. If calcutta is 57 lakhs and Jaipur’s 36 lakhs either Calcutta is underperforming or Japiur’s overperforming! I think a lot is incomplete here though..
Comment by beld on 21 November 2008:
gosh GR made 40cr week 1(extended) and then 12 cr in the next 2 weeks. thats a JBJ/Tashan like crash. the opening saved it - seems like

I wonder if Bombay’s complete.. he has 6.15 crores for Bombay and close to 4 crores for Delhi. I’ve never seen such a low differential between the two!
Satyam:It’s true to some extent but more than Mumbai numbers I would be bit skeptical about the Delhi one,I hope Taran has not goofed up there like he did for “Fashion”.Delhi putting up 4 cr is something only Race and SIK have done so far.Even GR could only gross little more than 3 cr in 9 days.I am not really sure if the Delhi one is correct.I would like to verify with FI.
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Som, yeah that makes sense.. he might have done a double on Delhi!
Beld: GR is indeed a crash, we shouldn’t be fooled by the opening. But yes let’s say no film that has crashed that badly has made more than 50 crores! For some weird reason the audience took a while to decide they didn’t like this! Yeah there were holidays and so forth. Still films that are going to crash like that don’t make so much to begin with.
Comment by satyam on 21 November 2008:
Anyway I’m really off now!
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
GR has taken some sort of mammoth fall in the 3rd week, this is quite a crash for a film which had opened to huge response all over India.Had this not enjoyed the long extended Diwali weekend(5days),It would have remained well off the 50 cr mark.
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
Beld - you can be right on Guru’s 45 crores … but BOI had surely under-reported Guru … there were a few reports that Guru had a worldwide gross of 100 crores … i did a back calculation …. 20 crores overseas, 80 crores or so domestic gross … using 0.65 conversion factor we get around 50 crores Net in India … it may be slightly less … but dont think it was 10 crores less! BOI occasionally under-reports movies … Krrish and Guru comes to my mind instantly.
Satyam - I found Jay lenient on SR’s numbers although he called it a below average … and he was much more harsh on JA. Anyways, lets not dwell on this.
BOI has once again given a lower number on Dostana (25 crores????) …. i am with Beld that dostana is not the sort of movie that will have too many multiple takers … but if its trends decently, 50 crores is on the cards here. On the other side, a crash would mean 40-45 crores in the end.
Yuvraaj will be another 15 crores or so movie for Salman.

“the media narrative on this film was settled after 2-3 days.”
Agree here Satyam … irrespective of the trending, Dostana is a welcome hit for Abhi considering the raw deal meted out to him by RGV (why kill him off?) and Goldie this year (he is the main culprit for the Drona disaster!)
Comment by Som on 21 November 2008:
The Price Fails For Dostana
Dostana has managed pretty decent India theatrical business and good theatrical business overseas but the heavy price has little chance to be recovered. Even if the film surpasses expectations and sustains supremely well in India and Overseas at best it may recover their costs for YRF.
Yashraj Films paid 50 crore for the worldwide theatrical rights, satellite rights and overseas video. The total cost is 55 crore with release costs. The returns are unlikely to cross 50 crore.
Dostana may fetch 25-26 crore revenue from India, Overseas should get 10-11 crore revenue while Satellite rights and overseas video revenue will be around 12-13 crore giving Yashraj Films losses around 5-8 crore.
The producers have fared much better as they have 50 crore income from selling the film to Yashraj and an added 10 crore revenue from music and India video making it 60 crore revenue on a 40 crore budget.

I was skeptical about Taran’s Delhi city’s numbers and it does seem to be the case.If the BOI’s circuit billing for Delhi is correct, Dostana can no way fetch close to 4 cr in the Delhi city alone.I guess Taran might have again goofed up and put up the gross instead of nett.FI should come handy.
Btw BOI is again up to it’s game, trying to downplay Dostana one way or the other.it has started to talk about the failing price when the movie has just entered it’s 2nd weekened.LOL!Too early to talk such things.Isn’t it?When its a SR or a Dostana, talk about the selling price when movies like GR or to some extent SIK sold at a big price(45 cr and 70 cr reportedly)has hardly done anything remarkable to go soft on them. There is hardly any consistency here.

Ach - ya, my take is guru is somewhere around 45.
Som - right on abt the boi commentary.
Actually satyam’s comment is an interesting debate on its own. What do u say abt a movie like gr - that crashes after week 1 but still makes 55cr total business. here is a clear case that trending isn’t always a reflection of a product’s selling power. I think its a redefinition of how u sell the product. To be fair, akshay is a star today bcoz of this concept. Except for welcome, none of his movies have trended well. I think we will see more and more sik,gr,race in the coming yrs. Only srk, hrithik and aamir can try different product strategy and succeed. Abhishek could but he just totally lacks bo power. I dare say the bachchan sir name has hurt him
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 21 November 2008:
I think it has become a fashion by all BO sources to downplay a movie when they dont like it … and site some reason or another …. BOI did it for SR and now they are not being kind to Dostana! Taran has something against GR …. Some had problems with a Race or a SIK or a JA…. but in all these cases the collections were more than enough for the movies to get ‘Hit’ tag (SIK, Race, JA, GR)… even SR was Average to below Average at worst (not a flop).
BOI is not the only one here … nor is it an exception to the ‘downplaying’ game.
As for Dostana, it will be a hit for sure if it gets to 50 crores which it will imo.

Mumbai: Yuvvraaj released on Friday with a poor opening of 30 – 40 percent at multiplexes across India.
The movie picked up slightly on Saturday and registered an occupancy level higher than Friday’s by 10 - 20 percent.
“Yuvvraaj has not opened well and to make things worse it will see a major fall Monday onwards. The film will not hold itself at the box office because of the poor reviews and bad word of mouth publicity,” says a multiplex officer on condition of anonymity.
In fact, last week’s release Dostana produced by Dharma Production is fairing better than Yuvvraaj at few multiplexes and is at par across other multiplexes, especially in metros.
“Dostana is going strong with 60 – 65 percent occupancy on Saturday in metros and minimum 45 percent in non metros,” informs Cinemax senior vice president Devang Sampat.
Moreover there is not much difference in the number of shows allotted to last week’s release Dostana and this Friday’s release Yuvvraaj. Yuvvraaj’s number of shows is either same or lesser by one-two shows. In fact, at a few multiplexes Dostana still has more shows than Yuvvraaj.
In smaller centers like UP, Punjab and Gujarat, Yuvvraaj has had a better opening as compared to its opening in metros. “Yuvvraaj has taken a better opening in smaller centers than in metros,” says Inox vice president programming and distribution Utpal Acharya.
Yuvvraaj stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor and Zayed Khan. It is directed and produced by Subhash Ghai.

Can Yuvvraaj Make Money?
Q. What are the chances of Oye Lucky Lucky Oye?
A. The film should do well at multiplexes of metroes and mini metroes. It could even emerge a surprise hit.
Rohit Malhotra, India
Q. How much do Yuvvraaj and Dostana need for recovery, hit and superhit?
A. From a Indian theatrical point of view both films have similar costs and need 40 crore nett for recovery and 57 crore nett for Hit. For Super Hit you would be looking at 68.50 crore nett. All approx figures as the shares differ depending on where the money comes in from.
Wasim Ali, UAE
Q. Yuvvraaj is not doing well and God Tussi Great Ho and Saawariya also failed, would it be right to say Salman Khan is losing his following?
A. God Tussi Great Ho was a delayed film and Saawariya was not a Salman Khan film in the true sense. Yuvvraaj will probably fail but its the film which has failed, Salman Khan has a huge following and that following is still intact, he just needs the right films and Main Aur Mrs Khanna and Wanted may be those films as the former could open 35+ crore while latter has chances of being a record breaker.
Nitin Raiker, USA
Q. Can Yuvvraaj make money?
A. It has very little chance to make money, even recovery is a tough ask for the distributors. The producers have made money but most producers of big films make money as they fetch big prices.
K Bakhsi, UK
Comment by A C H I L L E S on 23 November 2008:
Taran used to use Indore multiplex figure to justify his claims for any drops previously … he isnt doing it for Dostana now … while these figures does indicate the movie has fallen badly, but its the fall in major cities that will hold the key to second week figures.
btw, 40 crores recovery sounds fine … but a hit at 57 crores? Interesting.
Comment by jayshah on 24 November 2008:
It is already Bizarre that Singh is Kinng needed only 60Cr for a hit and both Yuvvraaj and Dostana need near enough the same. Nuff said.
Comment by Som on 24 November 2008:
I was just going to point that out Jay.I am still trying to figure out which could be the distribution price in India if it has to get a 40 cr to be called as just “Average”.Is it 40 cr as the rule says distribution price must be exactly same as the the collections for getting a “recovery” tag Or is it close to 26 cr,the distributor’s share to be precise if film does 40 cr? If it’s the former case, how can the movie be called as Hit and Super hit in 57 and 68 cr respectively? What sort of formula or criterian is on play here? How come Dostana needs 57 cr just to be called as a “Hit” when Singh is King needed 60 cr and Race and JA became super hits at the very same range????Is the distribution price of an Abhishek-John starrer in India almost the same as what the top stars like Akshay and Hrithik’s movies have fetched in the recent past?

‘Yuvvraaj’ box-office collections disappointing
Comment by Som on 24 November 2008:
Subhash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj has taken a poor opening despite big names and hype attached to it. The film opened to low collections in multiplexes across the nation and just about average collections in the single screens. Lot of hopes that were pinned on Subhash Ghai’s Yuvvraaj came down crashing on Day One itself. The critics too tore the film apart.
What does the BO say?
Bhumika Tewari, AVP Programming Fun Cinemas tells us, “Yuvvraaj, the only Bollywood film releasing this week, opened at the box-office with 40% collection across India. The movie had a better opening in smaller centers compared to metros. It’s the last week’s release Dostana which has kept the box-office going strong with 95% occupancy especially on weekends. Last week was a good week compared to this one.”

Comment by satyam on 25 November 2008:
3 crores or more from Delhi is itself a huge number given the kind of film Dostana is. 2 years ago Krrish had 3.15 crores from Delhi, that was a record! The divide between the multiplex audiences and the rest is really huge. Something that I have always rued for multiple reasons.
But 28 crores for Dostana is basically about 32-35 crores probably for a more regular film in this genre, everything else being the same. Of course a SRK could have got that initial even with this genre as he would just have more of the family audience on board initially. Usually Johar’s films don’t play well outside multiplexes or major metros. But here there is the added disadvantage of the theme alienating many family audiences even in his base.
Comment by satyam on 25 November 2008:
By the way on Yuvvraaj I always find it idiotic when the trade pretends that a film has ‘big names’ and still didn’t open big. The average cine goer has more info today than at any point before. Everyone knows everything about every release. People aren’t just going to show up because of a star though a bigger star gets a better initial on average than a lesser star all else being equal. We’ve seen this with even the biggest stars where even really high profile stuff was vastly below the respective star’s initial elsewhere. No exceptions to this. Salman would get a way better initial in a comedy and this is what he should stick to. He’s also been a bit crazy about all of this. He was doing all those comedies with Dhawan years ago and now that comedies are really ruling the roost he’s hardly doing them! He should have had a followup to Partner in some form or fashion. While I’ve never had any illusions about Salman’s position the last few years or more the fact nonetheless is that he could have done better than this. But Yuvvraaj is a film that even God couldn’t have saved!

Incidentally Tango has confirmed about the goof up Taran has done with Delhi’s numbers.I have not checked FI yet, don’t know if Taran has done something like that with few other centers as well.Btw Kolkata numbers given by Taran was an incomplete one, BOI has 1.52 cr from West Bengal which means the Kolkata city number must be a big one.
