I promise somewhat irregular posts on (in no particular order) Indian politics, cinema, and anything else that catches my fancy... Why "Qalandar"? So-called "liminal" religious traditions are a particular interest of mine, and "qalandar" is the sort of untranslatable, ambiguous, yet enormously evocative word that for me touches upon and articulates the experience of the sub-continent's "little" traditions in a particularly memorable way...not to mention the fact that in popular lingo the word has more than a merely religious/spiritual connotation, and can mean a bunch of other things, including a smart alec, wannabe, what-have-you...

Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vaaranam Aayiram took an extraordinary opening in a dozen Chennai screens with 93 per cent. At the multiplexes, the film simply rocked at 100 per cent. From Sathyam and Inox together it netted an awesome Rs 24.35 lakh in three days! At number two is Dostana, which also opened very well in Chennai city where it was released in five screens and grossed nearly Rs 20 lakh, and is in the second position. It is Abhishek Bachchan’s best ever opening for any of his films in Chennai. In the third position is Ajit’s Aegan, and in the fourth position is Quantum Of Solace, which has collapsed after a good opening. And in the last position is Fashion which continues to attract the upper class audiences.

Saw VA the other day and I liked it. It has its problems -drags quite a lot in the second half and some dialogues in English seem weird at places - but the movie struck a chord with me. Surya was exemplary, definitely one of his best performances. Loved the songs as well, they’ve been picturized extremely well.

Thanks Arun — that’s high praise for Surya’s performance given he’s given more than one performance I think highly of…will get this in a few months when Ayngaran’s subtitled DVDs come to my rescue!

Anyone seen Ajith’s Aegan (mentioned in the link)? I’ve heard it’s a remake of Main Hoon Na…
