It was in 2007 when Shahrukh Khan appeared on stage, in- front of a thousand-something crowd, wearing a black trouser that finished just a little above his heels, a grey coat and a black hat a la Raj Kapoor style and enacted the ever romantic Pyaar Hua Ikraar Hua Hai song and many such hits.
Back then it was for a concert where King Khan performed in a bid to pay a tribute to B-town’s ultimate showman. Paying tributes to Indian cinema legends is not new to SRK. He paid a tribute to Kishore Kumar through a stage show ‘Shahrukh Khan Live – The Music and Madness of Kishore Kumar’ in 2003, to Dilip Kumar through a performance at IIFA 2003-2004 and also to Amitabh Bachchan through a show called ‘Superhit Muqabla’ about 15 years ago.
And this time, Khan has taken a step ahead. Its not just one star that SRK will be saluting but will also make the tribute eternal and memorable with a 6-minute long song in his soon to be released flick Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi . The song is penned by Jaideep Sahni with music by Salim-Suleiman and has Sonu Niigam behind the mike. The song reminds one of the Kamal Haasan-Rati Agnihotri starrer Mere Jivan Saathi from Ek Duje Ke Liye .
But here, it’s not just the name of movies that form the crux of the song but it’s the choice of movies and song titles segregated into 5 parts belonging to 5 legendary actors.
# The song starts with the impeccable Awara Hoon music and unmistakably reminds one of Raj Kapoor. The next lines talk of the showman’s films like Sangam, Chaliya and Anari and songs like Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan .
What forms as the break and start point of each stanza in the 5 sections of the song is the mention of movies Hum Hai Rahee Pyaar Ke, Phir Milenge, Chalte Chalte , which all belong to the industry’s top Khans, namely Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan respectively.
# The next star in line is Dev Anand. The song further leads you into the magic that one experiences Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai and blends into Jiya O Jiya Kuch Bol Do, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne Ek Ghar Banaonga and Pal Bhar Ke Liye Koi.
# The song then breaks into a Yaahoo! and this is the original screeching that cannot fail to remind you of Shammi Kapoor. The song then makes intelligent use of words from Kapoor’s songs and films like O Haseena Julfon Waali, Juglee and Badan Pe Sitaare .
# You get indulged into some foot tapping and suddenly you hear someone calling at you… Ae Babu Moshai . This marks the entry of Rajesh Khanna. The song furthers into Jai Jai Shiv Shankar , Mere Jivan Saathi and the ever favourite Mere Sapno Ki Rani .
# The song continues ahead with Dard-E-Dil, Zamaane Ko Dikhana Hai, Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin , and ends the tribute with Sonu Niigam going beautifully sensuous as he announces O Meri Chandani thereby reminding us of rockstar Rishi Kapoor.
The song in itself is very beautiful and takes one down the memory lanes of some of the biggest hits of Bollywood. And with Aditya Chopra behind the lens and Shahrukh Khan enacting the bit; we just can’t wait to see the song on screen for we are sure it will be a delicious visual treat.

From the little that I have seen of the song in the theatrical promo, this looks like a stunningly picturized song…could well be the highlight of the movie

If this report is accurate, this is the second film in a row where SRK’s over-eagerness to match himself up with B’wood heroes of yesteryear (3 of 4 if we count Don). A genuine “event” simply occurs, although it may be predicted, analyzed, and anticipated — but attempts to stage manage an “event” and force-feed it are unseemly, and reek of propaganda.

What “event” Q? Are we back at legacy talks again? If that is the case then the legacy has already been handed over to Abhi – perhaps this is why there is no tribute to Bg B.

agreed Qalandar..
Neelu, you continue to be unable or unwilling to ‘read’ the case I’ve made for Abhishek in this context.. I’d like to think it’s a little more sophisticated than your characterisations of it.. which doesn’t mean one cannot disagree.. but the responses in this case are ‘non-serious’.
By the way I say this completely sincerely. Chill out a bit. Every other response of yours is just so resentful.

Satyam – for once I wish you would take you own advice and chill out a bit. You and your cohort actually drain all enjoyment from film watching and film discussions by degenerating every discussion into fans of this and that, and talks of who is right to do what in a film. You polarize people and your dishonesty in such discussions is palpable. I have seen. read, and understood whatever case you make for a legacy (and I cannot deny your sophistication with the way you make your case – in fact it verged on sophistry) and it is laughable to me. So please spare me the “trying to reason with a fractious child” talk. In the end who leaves a legacy and who does not will be judged by time, not some “talking-heads” on NG. More importantly, who will leave his own legacy will be judged by time. The fact that Baby Bachchan succeeds best in comedy and not intense roles already brands him a misfit for that particular “legacy”, however much you and the gang want to burden him with it. If he continues in the Dad’s footsteps there will only be more Dronas for him.

One question:
Shahrukh pays a tribute to yesteryears stars, its forceful, he doesn’t include Big B in OSO, its a gross mistake. So in a way, chit bhi meri, pat bhi meri, anta mere baba ka.

how can he include big b when that song itself was on line of a big b song (john johnny janardhan)
may be to give tribute he needs the platform of a certain star only
title rbnbdj( which is a superhit song of a certain naseeb)is again a tribute only
“The fact that Baby Bachchan succeeds best in comedy and not intense roles already brands him a misfit for that particular “legacy”, however much you and the gang want to burden him with it. If he continues in the Dad’s footsteps there will only be more Dronas for him.”
that was a news for me what was yuva , sarkar AND GURU
drona was more of a fantasy cum action never seen anyone label it as serious cum intense thing

Some logic there. So if the song title is from a film (and which film title is not from some old song somewhere – barring a few exceptions here and there) then clips of the films actor cannot be included, nor can he be included in the tribute. Yuva was not accepted was it? I am bringing in the Dil se and Swades type arguments here for consistency. Sarkar did not lead to successful franchise did it? As for Guru, I doubt that without the marriage announcement hoopla it would have worked as well. Hoopla arguments too have to be consistent.

YUVA WAS HIGLY ACLAIMED AND BROUGHT ABHISHEK BACK TO MAINSTREAM AND I GUESS WAS AN AVERAGE EARNER IN BO TO
DON’T KNOW HOW FRANCHISE COME INTO PLAY
by the way same logic can be easily applied to a certain khan
whats his track record on action , comedy ?

That certain Khan or his fans are claiming no legacy – as for action and BO success – I can think of Baazigar and Karan Arjun (hyped up action?) and comedy – MHN and OSO qualify. I am sorry, what was the question?

legacy for what legacy it comes with a certain body of work
btw why to cry for suraj huya madhyam and say gujarish was inspired from it then and why to say a certain look is inspired from break free etc etc
mhn and oso comedy ? good to know that
neelu 15 November 2008

Lagacy for a body of work done of course. So what is the body of work done by Abhi or even Aamir? Suraj Hua Maddham is being copied in Guzaarish – it is clear as day for anyone to see. It has nothing to do with legacy. If anyone thinks MHN and OSO are NOT comedy then they need to look up what genre spoofs belong in.

“In the end who leaves a legacy and who does not will be judged by time, not some “talking-heads” on NG”
Well if this is true Neelu why are you so bothered by my comments in this regard to keep referring to them?!
“The fact that Baby Bachchan succeeds best in comedy and not intense roles already brands him a misfit for that particular “legacy”, however much you and the gang want to burden him with it.”
Ah where does one begin..?! Does one have to remind Ms Neelu of Bachchan’s comic talents? But let’s leave this aside. Abhishek is not good in intense outings like Yuva or Guru or Sarkar…?! Hmmm.. could it be that he does pretty well here but is also good in comedy?! I am Abhishek’s greatest fan though I cannot say I prefer (yet) his comedy to his serious roles.. to each his or her own.. but if Abhishek has been failing in Guru and Sarkar and Yuva well I wish him more such failures.. I apologize for arguing here… I missed the ‘fact’ bit.. a counter-factual perhaps?!
Once again ‘resentment’ leads one into the direction of some very questionable conclusions!
By the way do me a favor.. I’ll accept all of these points but could you please stop this silliness of suggesting that Suraj hua madham is influential? It’s not even the song most remembered from K3G (that would have to be shava shava!). It’s not even remembered as much as bole chudiyan! I have seen Kehdo na playing more often than suraj! Having said that I probably missed the pyramids in the Ghajini preview. And of course the situation in the song has never been seen in Hindi or Tamil cinema before.. I mean how many times do we see such romantic videos in films shot in that fashion?! Hey it’s a boy and girl and it’s open spaces. Must be suraj hua! Einstein smiles!

Satyam – Ms. Neelu can likewise ask – why are you bothered by her comments? Please feel free to ignore completely. Ms. Neelu is well aware of all talents any of the Bachchans may have and is also entitled to her opinion. Since all personal opinions are cited as fact here, she reserves the right to do the same. She is really not in the mood to do any favors at all, but will ask – what Shava Shava? The lone tree, the desert, the woman in a red dress, the guy with his arms raised = Suraj Hua Maddham. Einstein agrees.
