Critics Update: ‘Fashion’ (B+) Trumps ‘Golmaal Returns’ (C-) This Diwali sees the release of two highly anticipated films in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion and Rohit Shetty’s sequel to the successful Golmaal - Fun Unlimited (B, 61%), Golmaal Returns.
Golmaal Returns has not been living up to the reviews garnered by the original, which scored a B with a 61% (click here for all news and reviews for the original, Golmaal - Fun Unlimited). While it’s still early and many more reviews will be coming in over the next several days, the film is currently at a C- with 45%. Of the 8 reviews counted for the film’s grade (click here to see how we determine which reviews count for a film’s grade), only 1 has been positive, 2 average and the remaining 5 have been negative. It already has more negative reviews than the original, which also had 14 positive reviews and 2 average reviews. Of course, many more reviews will be in for Golmaal Returns, so be sure to keep checking back at this space. For all news and reviews for Golmaal Returns, click here.
Madhur Bhandarkar has been one of the most consistent directors in Bollywood. Since 2005, his films have included Page 3 (C+) (which looked at the newspaper industry), Corporate (B-) (which looked at corporate politics) and Traffic Signal (C-), which scored the lowest grade of the three films. This time Bhandarkar looks at the fashion industry with Fashion, and the early results are very positive. Of the 7 reviews already in for the film, 5 have been positive, 1 has been average and 1 has been negative earning it a B+ (click here to see our grading scale) with a score of 66%.
Reviewer Subhash Ghai was very impressed with the film. In his review here at AllBollywood.com, he says that the film “gives us something to hold on to permanently even as the characters on screen lose practically everything worth holding on to.” He goes and to say that it is “A truly outstanding film” (for Jha’s full review, click here).
While it’s still early, Fashion right now ranks as the 7th best reviewed film of 2008, slightly above Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (B+) and right below Jodhaa Akbar (B+) (for the best reviewed films of 2008 click here). Of course, like with Golmaal Returns, many more reviews for the film will be coming in over the next several days so it’s grade can still go up or down.
