The Dark Knight - My Review
July 18th, 2008

Riveting, Vicious, Ruthless, Dark, Scary, Frightening, Unimaginable, Exceptional, Mind-Boggling, Mind-Blowing, Out-Of-This-World…these are some of the words that describe Heath Ledger performance as the psychopathic “joker”. The tone he uses throughout the film gives chills up your spine. The scary laugh he showcases throughout the film gives you goosebumps. From his body-language to his unforgettable look, from the way Christopher Nolan presents the character to the way Heath plays this character is just perfect. When leaving the cinema I was very happy. All the buzz about Heath’s magnificent performance was appropriate. The high expectations that people had from him were met. But once I entered my car, I realized that this precious actor of ours in no more and it saddens me to see such a talent leave this world at a very young age. If this man was here today there would of been a huge line of directors and producers at his door this very moment. Whenever Heath is on screen it menacing. He brings so much power and charisma into this character that he makes Jack Nicholson look really bad. I have a lot of respect for you Jack, but you just got owned. I can go on and on about Heath’s act, but I will stop for now ending it off by saying the man deserves the best supporting actor award. Aaron Eckhart, who I had my doubt’s about, delivers an astonishing performance. His transition from Harvey Dent to Two-Face is very well handled by Nolan. Christian Bale is basically playing two characters, Batman and Bruce. He excells in both. Everything about Batman is cool. The new batsuit, the new vehicles, the new weapons and the new gadgets are all worth praising. Michael Caine has shorter role here compared to the Batman Begins. His character adds the light moments in this very serious and intense crime epic. Morgan Freeman has a bigger role here compared to the Batman Begins. Morgan is as usual sauve, slick and witty. Maggie Gyllenhaal fits the bill as Rachel Dawes. She is more convincing than Katie Holmes. As for Gary Oldman, he’s brilliant. James Gordan’s character is given much more importance in this film than the first. So far I am just talking about how good everyone was in their respected roles, what about the director? Well the way Nolan handles this film is just unbelievable. He know his craft, he is technically brilliant. Nolan has given us one of the most darkest crime drama’s ever. And that is not an easy thing to do when your handling comic book characters. Even in this unheard city which has heroes and villains with masks on, Nolan honestly potrays everything with a pinch of realism. The character development is worth praising. Every character grows in this film. The battle that Batman is going through, the growth of the Joker as Gotham City’s most feared criminal, the transition of Harvey Dent to Two-Face, the burden of responsibilites placed on Gordan’s shoulders are all magnificently potrayed in this film. The action scenes will leave you breathless. The sequences with vehicles and explosions will have you on the edge of your seat. The 10 minute battle between the Joker and Batman at mid point of the film is going to go down in history as one of the best action sequences. Christopher and his brother Jonathan have teamed up to give us one great screenplay. There is not one boring scene in this film. I didn’t even have any problem with the length of this film. Those two-and-half hours flew by fast. The cinematography is beautiful, while the editing is crisp. Technically the film takes Hollywood to another level. This film has it all. Nolan concentrates on each and every character very carefully. The film will make you think, this is just not some popcorn flick. There are hidden meanings behind each situation and incident. The background music is creepy. And I mean that in a positive way. Whenever the Joker is about to enter a scene this creepy, eeire instrumental comes on. That insturmental piece will make your heart thump fast and loud. The only small problem I have with this film was that the scarecrow got wasted. Actually he wasn’t even needed in this film to be honest. Back to Nolan, the man has given us a very dark, gritty, real, honest picture here. Something that will go down in comic book history. This film is an epic. One of the best films I have seen this year, no two doubts about that. Therefore, I highly reccommend people to catch this one in the theatres. Even if your not a Batman fan, this film will still appeal to cinema lovers.

God Bless Your Soul Heath, We Will Never Forget You.

  1. I cannot wait to see it after both these NG reviews. Two of the best reviews I’ve read, written with loads of passion.

  2. You have to see it…It’s like 5:00am here…I still can’t sleep bro…Nolan’s film has tooken over my mind.

As for Heath…OMG…I haven’t seen such a scary performance since Forest as Idi Amin…actually Heath is way scarier, way ruthless, way fiernce, way haunting.

  3. I believe the Scarecrow will make an appearance in the third flick cuz remember that the Joker’s been taken to Arkham Asylum. Fans of the comic will know that this is where he meets Harley Quinn. Also, I believe the Nolans had big plans for the third- they spend the final 30 mins setting it up(including the ambiguity over Two-Face). But I cannot see anyone playing the Joker after Heath Ledger. By far, the most haunting performance this decade.
