Interesting tidbits on Naalu Penungal and his next venture. He also has a few choice comments on Bollywood and awards…

Thanks for this Chipguy. I recently saw Elippathayam for the first time. It is simply brilliant. The kind of film that will probably take a few more viewings to absorb in all its subtlety. In many ways this offers a ‘reading’ of Jalsaghar. I didn’t think as highly of Nizhalkkuthu when I first saw it but I will revisit this one as well.
This interview is outstanding. A joy to read for more than one reason. Adoor mentions Dreams (Kurosawa) and Ray’s Teen Kanya as films built around multiple narratives. I would also add Kobayashi’s masterful Kwaidan (the uncut version).
On the Elippathayam DVD (a British release) too there is a fine Adoor interview where he seems to touch upon his philosophy of art. I would say that he sounds very Marxist on some points (not a negative in my book) but this would hardly be a shock in Kerala!

Satyam, Elippathayam is certainly a great movie. From Adoor’s ouevre, Mathilukal is my other favorite- it’s also probably the most accessible
Adoor most definitely has Marxist leanings. Mukhamukham was very interesting in this regard- the return of a Marxist leader and the various responses to it in the face of his silence.

Didn’t realize until recently that Adoor had made only 10 or so feature films. I hope to see all of these at some point or the other. There was a retro of his films in NY in the mid-90s but for some reason I wasn’t able to attend and since then I’ve always considered it one of my criminal acts (though there are many!) in life..
