Box Office: Not a Krrish, LS 2050 draws poor advance, JTJN better; TPTM sinks
Box Office: Not a Krrish, LS 2050 draws poor advance, JTJN better; TPTM sinks

Love Story 2050, the 50 crore epic debut of Harman Baweja billed as the producer Harry Baweja’s answer to Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish has failed to match Krrish in one crucial criteria right at the onset: the advance bookings. The promos have failed to generate a big initial response and bookings for the magnum opus sci-fi release are tepid at best, garnering only about a 25-30% advance bookings so far. If one were to compare LS 2050 with Hrithik Roshan’s debut in 2000: Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, it stands out that KNPH recorded a 100% opening week in Bombay on the week of January 14, 2000. That looks just about impossible right now for LS 2050 even though the release volumes are moderate. Given the advance, the film will need a quick and sweeping word of mouth given the massive investment cost.
The other debuting fare is another family affair as it launches Aamir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan. Fortunately there, the promos have worked better as the opening bookings are better if not spectacular at around 35-40%, also on moderate number of screenings. But JTYJN is being produced by Aamir Khan, who has had a fairly good track record in production so far.
Both films will need to do a lot better than the openings are indicating however to go on to where they want to be over the coming weeks. LS 2050 is a Reliance release with 83 prints in Mumbai opening week. PVR’s distribution wing on the other hand is releasing JTYJN with 66 prints in Mumbai.
Meanwhile Yash Raj Films and Saif Ali Khan got another setback this week as Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic has flopped. The film started without much of an opening, picked up in multiplexes over Saturday/Sunday. But barring Tuesday, the collections for Yash Raj Films’ 2nd release of the year were pretty much on freefall, and 2nd weekend advance looks weak again. As solo lead, Saif Ali Khan has not had major box office acclaim despite big banners. As for Rani Mukherji, the last real hit featuring her in the lead remains Bunty & Babli in 2005 three years ago.

Makers of drona are already cursing themselves for jumping in this genre without giving a decent thought.

Well, as far as I know the advance was much better than what IBOS say. I hope they do not go around deconstructing this one too!
