The euphoria will not die: Abhishek
While dad Amitabh Bachchan has been ‘blogging’ his views and opinions, son Abhishek Bachchan has been missing from action for a while now. Apart from making a few cursory appearances with wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the Jr B has been keeping a low profile for a while now. “I’ve been busy working,” explains Abhishek.
Now, with his film Sarkar Raj about to release, Abhishek is out of exile. While his performance in the original Sarkar as Shankar Nagre was appreciated, the sequel is believed to be more challenging as it apparently rides on his shoulders. “I don’t think Sarkar Raj focuses on me. Sarkar was about a son taking over the day-to-day running from the father. Sarkar Raj is about how Shankar Nagre takes over the decision making for the family and lets the father do what he likes,” he explains.
Real vs reel
The relationship between Subhash (Big B) and son Shankar in the film has an underlying conflict. Has that ever happened with him in real life? “Dad and I have the same comfortable relationship that the duo has.

Two recent obits brought back a question that I often get asked outside of India – “why does Hindi cinema continue to purvey the same formula with minimal changes to its audience and why does the audience not tire of it?” It’s a question asked on PFC on many occasions.
The answer is….Wait. May be I am getting ahead of myself.
First the obits:
Albert Hofmann, Swiss pharmacist and the man best known for being the first to have synthesized LSD and tasted it, passed away on April 29, 2008. He was 102.Vijay Tendulkar, playwright, social observer and commentator best known for his plays and scripts in early 70s which exposed political and social hypocrisy prevalent in Indian society, died in a Pune hospital on May 19, 2008. He was 80.
So, what’s the connection between them and the original question posed?

Mumbai, May 23 (IANS) “Lagaan”, “Swades”, “Jodhaa-Akbar”… After three intense films, Ashutosh Gowariker is ready to get into a light frothy romance that he says requires “no research”.
“What’s Your Rashi?”, which will star Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja, takes him “far away” from his earlier three films, says Gowariker.
“In ‘What’s Your Rashi?’ I don’t have to go into historical details. But a good comedy is a challenge of its own. The process of arriving at the humour is extremely difficult,” says the acclaimed director in an exclusive interview to IANS.

Do Anita or Subhash Nagre get ‘wacked off’ in Sarkar Raj?
Friday, May 23, 2008 -
As the biggest release of the year, Sarkar Raj, nears its theatrical release on June 6th 2008, the film is promising up to be a cinematic event of sorts.
Rumors and speculations on the film had been going around ever since its inception 2 years ago, and the film’s expectation meter reached a different level when the film started with the lead heroine added to be Aishwarya Rai, who unlike her conventional movies of the past, is said to be seen in the mould of a corporate woman, trying to indulge an already married Abhishek Bachchan in this Ram Gopal Varma followup to the 2005 smash hit Sarkar.
A number of questions and rumors are thus circulating about the plot angles in the Bachchan mafia film. Since it is noted that Abhishek Bachchan was married off to Tanisha Mukherjee in Sarkar I, how would the angle with him and Aishwarya Rai, the new entry in the sequel of Sarkar, would be handled by the maker Ram Gopal Varma.

SRK takes blame for dipping TRPs of Paanchvi Pass
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on Friday said that he took the blame for the dipping TRPs of his television show Kya Aap Panchvi Pass Se Tez Hain because he was the biggest attraction on it and did not become attractive enough to get the desired viewers.
“Even in my films, it is said that it will get a good opening because I am there. If I consider the same yardstick, a star of my calibre should have brought enough audiences before the television set. If there is no opening and lack of appeal for the show despite my presence, then I think I am responsible. But, I do my best whatever I can do creatively,” Shah Rukh said while interacting with a select group of journalists on the sets of Paanchvi Pass at film city in suburban Mumbai.
However, he defended his decision to do the show because it was educative and he liked being in the company of children. “May be the format was not appealing, but we were binded by the original format (Are you smarter than the fifth grader),”he said

At least, not to me. Imran Khan is taller at 5’11, and he’s got a leaner, softer and dreamier look. Whereas Aamir Khan, his famous uncle, well if you’ve seen him lately, gives every indication of going the Mike Tyson way. He’s raw energy and all chunky, rippling muscle; very intense, yet without Iron Mike’s crazy killer expression. But Aamir has got into the skin of a role. He’s in character for his new action film Ghajini. And as nephew Imran, a keen follower of the Aamir Khan method of acting, puts it, “Maamu doesn’t act, he understands the character, gets a grasp on what he’s supposed to do, and then just flows.”
I am at 24, Pali Hill, Imran’s bungalow, having biscuits and tea with the uncle and nephew. Aamir, who injured his hamstring while shooting for Ghajini in Hyderabad, has found his feet again. Today, after a four-week layoff, he returns to action. “Well, not action scenes, but back to shooting,” Aamir clarifies. “On June 1, I will resume action, there’s still three days of the climax pending in Hyderabad.” He was told to take bed rest, but soon got bored, and instead hobbled over to Imran’s home to take his nephew through the countdown on his debut film Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.
Aamir has produced the film, but he’s not acting in it, and nor is he launching Imran through Jaane Tu… “If I wanted to present Imran with anything, I’d give him a car, not a film,” says Aamir with a touch of exasperation. But, yes, Aamir is very interested in how Imran’s role is shaping up. He was generous enough to share Imran’s first photograph with his fans on his blog recently. Till then, nobody outside Bollywood had seen his nephew. “I thought I’d introduce him to my fans,” says Aamir. The response was instantaneous. “Go check it out,” Aamir tells me, “it ranges from ‘Imran’s a hot hunk’ to ‘My God, he looks so much like you’.”
I ask Aamir what he sees in young Imran. And the nephew quips, tongue firmly in cheek, “A return in investment!”
But Aamir says, “He has an unusual personality on screen, the camera likes him, he’s got a lot of screen presence, his personality suits the script and his character.” Jaane Tu… will release on July 4, but Imran has two more films coming up soon after, Kidnap with Sanjay Dutt and Luck. How does it feel to be an actor, I ask him. “I don’t feel like a star, if that’s what you mean,” he replies. “For me, acting is just another day at work. I like my work, but acting is in the family, making films is our business.”

Anurag Kashyap’s much awaited film Gulal is a tribute to one of the greatest lyricists of the Hindi film industry, Sahir Ludhianvi, and is based on a song from Guru Dutt’s Pyaasa.
“My film Gulal is a tribute to the great lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi and is based on the song Yeh mehlon, yeh takhton, yeh taajon ki duniya written by him for the film Pyaasa,” Kashyap said.
It is a love story set against a certain backdrop, said the director without divulging more details.
“I have been trying to make this film for the last five to six years, but due to one reason or the other it was not possible,” said Kashyap.

First weekend performance of latest releaseJANNAT
has taken a huge opening all over and it is only going to be ‘mauja hi mauja’ from here on for this Emraan Hashmi starrer. Reason? Not just the film stays on as the only release of the week, the days to come would also be hardly throwing much challenge on it’s way. Though Bhatts had a hat trick of box office failures in the form of DHOKHA, AWARAPAN and SHOWBIZ in the year gone by, JANNAT has brought the smiles back on their faces.
The film not just took a good opening on Friday, it continued to show a constant escalation on Saturday and Sunday as well. Cricket theme, Pritam’s superhit music, Emraan Hashmi’s pull, fantastic promotion, solo release - everything just about fitted in perfectly well for JANNAT which has made it one of the biggest openers this year that has only seen RACE and JODHAA AKBAR as the two bona fide successes. Now JANNAT is all set to be the third big success of the year and it only has to be seen that how big a success it eventually turns out to be. As of today, the film is a HIT for sure!
Last week’s movies
There were two things brought to attention in this column last week. a) It was plain hogwash about BHOOTHNATH showing constant escalation as days passed by. The fact always remained that the film was always on a sticky ground. b) Second weekend was crucial to the film
sailing past the safety line. Well, as of now JANNAT has clearly disrupted the chances of BHOOTHNATH to sustain itself at the box office.
With only 14 crores coming in the first week, it would require a close watch to declare the box office outcome of BHOOTHNATH. However, at maximum, the film appears to be a coverage preposition. The film was best in Mumbai with 3 crores while Delhi was a decent 1.5 crores.
