The apology again! I wrote about this a couple of posts ago but I wish you would not apologize so much. In any case I must confess I am considerably less sanguine about Shahrukh Khan than you are. I hope this too is a ‘diplomatic’ response (and I understand why you would do so or he would respond accordingly given the media mischief)! Shahrukh Khan’s influence as I see it (and it would take some time to draw this out) has been a rather corrosive one for Hindi cinema and for many reasons. This is not just because of the cinema he represented at his peak (he too is diminished today but perhaps I shouldn’t add the ‘too’ there; I don’t see you as ‘diminished’ in any sense unless it be in the lack of fidelity you’ve maintained to your 70s legacy for many years now) but also the sort of politics he engendered off screen. I think you know about all of this far better than I do which is why I call your response ‘diplomatic’. I do think leaving all else aside that Shahrukh Khan was once a little boy who dreamed of becoming a big man like Amitabh Bachchan. He did in fact become rather big but trying to emulate you was always a bit like reaching for the heavens! You have referred to ‘language’ here. Let’s say that Shahrukh Khan’s Babel Tower also collapsed (his language and arts were always inadequate to his ambitions!)… Conversely I think that Aamir Khan has been the ‘good’ to every Shahrukh ‘ill’. I have recently written a piece in this context on the former:
That’s what is right! I like the fact that when you think AB is being a bit too polite (diplomatic as you put it) you state that as your perception and, quite bravely, are not ‘diplomatic’ about it!
I’m in agreement that the media took Amitabh’s quotes on the chat show data and ratings way out of order. The media twisted it all into negativity. There is no need for Amitabh to keep apologising for something that he did not do or meant any harm by stating on his blog.

The younger peer of yours who needs to be celebrated more than any other is Aamir Khan and for the reasons I mention in this piece.
