Top Ten Albums:Tashan Drops JA back into Top 3

Rank Last week Film Plusses Minuses
1 Jannat It is ‘Jannat’ and only ‘Jannat’ which is really selling in the true terms today. With the sales matching the trend of earlier Bhatt blockbusters like ‘Gangster’, ‘Zeher’ and ‘Kalyug’ and giving competition to the likes of ‘Murder’, ‘Jannat’ is a super successful soundtrack by Pritam. The number ‘Haan Tu Hai’ has released as well that should add on to the buzz! None

2 Race While DVDs of ‘Race’ are expected to hit the stands this week and reach the #1 position on the sales chart, the music too stays on in Top-3 for yet another week. This one is the smash hit of 2008! None

4 Jodhaa Akbar ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ is back in Top-3, what with ‘Tashan’ continuing to see a downwards trend. With hardly any contender from the newer releases, ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ is gaining quite some good sales for itself. This is one album that worked more as a package rather than a stand alone chartbuster track. None
5 Khuda Kay Liye Inching up by a spot, ‘Khuda Kay Liye’ continues to spin a surprise success story. Even this soundtrack is more of an amalgamation of different kind of genres coming together and making it a complete album. The album needs to be promoted all over to mandate a reach in the interiors as well. Currently, it’s only the urban centers which are the prime market for the music.
3 Tashan ‘Tashan’ is loosing ground at a very rapid pace, considering the film is now completely down and out. A good soundtrack that has failed due to a gamble-like marketing and promotion strategy of Yash Raj Films. The music has taken a fall greater than that of ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ which had a similar case of good music in a bad film. At least music of ‘Jhoom Barabar Jhoom’ had sustained to a decent success but here that too isn’t happening.
7 Taare Zameen Par Moving a spot up, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ is back to tapping the Top-5. Will it regain an entry? Doesn’t look so considering there are 5-7 new albums which have arrived/would be arriving on the stands soon. Still, ‘Taare Zameen Par’ is there to stay for long in Top-10 at the least. None
6 U Me Aur Hum The music of ‘U Me Aur Hum’ has done rather decently for itself, just like the film which got a new lease of life with ‘Tashan’ bombing at the box office. It is a pity that the film’s best song, the title track, didn’t quite get the mileage it deserved.
- - - With earlier albums like ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Jab We Met’ fading away and none of the newer releases like ‘Woodstock Villa’, ‘Bhoothnath’ or ‘Jimmy’ making any mark, there are no worthy contenders at the bottom of the charts. There are hopes though from A.R. Rahman’s ‘Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Naa’, Vishal-Shekhar’s ‘De Taali’ and Himesh Reshammiya’s ‘Dashavatar’ to ignite the charts again.
