KITES FLYING HIGH!!
May 12th, 2008

Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Kites’ created a history when Eros International bought the world wide rights of the upcoming film for a whopping Rs 120 crore, which is highest ever price offered to any bollywood flick.

Eros International has already paid the token signing amount of Rs 10 crore and the rest will be paid according to progression of the shooting of this mega budget film. The above deal was finalized by Rakesh Roshan, who is producing the film, and has just return from the US after location hunting for the shoot.

The amazing thing in this huge deal is that the ‘Kites’ is yet to go on the floors and not a single shot has been canned, but Eros offered this mind-boggling amount to the Roshan senior on the basis of his track record and Hrithik Roshan’s market standing. Besides, the ‘Kites’ will be Hrithik Roshan’s first film to be released early next year, as the actor do not have any other project in hand for the time being.

Though Hrithik Roshan’s films have always been  hit when directed by Rakesh Roshan (like ‘Kaho Na Pyar Hai’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ and ‘Krrish’), this already sold film is going to be directed by Anurag Basu of ‘Metro’ and ‘Gangster’ fame. Barbara Mori, a US based model-actor has been roped in to play the main lead in the film, while Kangana Ranaut, our bollywood beauty, will play the third angle in the story.

The theme of the film revolves around salsa dancing and hence to match the terrific dancing skills of Hrithik Roshan, an international face was needed, who would be an expert in this form of dancing. This led Rakesh Roshan to zero in on Barbara Mori who is not only beautiful to make for good combination with the greek god looks of Hrithik, but also an expert in this form of dancing.

Before Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Kites’ was sold for Rs 120 crore, the record of the highest price tag was held by Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Om Shanti Om’ which was around Rs 75 crore. Even that price had been paid by Eros to Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and this time too the buyer is the same company. Another movie which has fetched a big amount is Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Singh Is Kinng’. It has been bought by Studio 18 from Blockbuster Movie Entertainers. The film is nearing completion and stars Katrina Kaif opposite Akshay in it.

Compare this mind boggling amount of Rs 120 crore with a measly Rs 2 crore(it seems na!!) which the High Court had ordered Rakesh Roshan to pay Ram Sampat in the copyright violation case concerning ‘Krazzy 4’, and Rakesh had gone to town complaining to one and all about the big amount. Does not it look that Ram Sampat was right in demanding the money?

Hmm…..hmm…..whatever… but it seems that with this Hrithik-Barbara starrer bollywood has arrived on the international entertainment scene in a big way, keep it up guys!!
