JayShah’s Saturday Box Office Column – Slump at box office…
Note all numbers are from Trade Guide
Reporting Methodology
1) New films most of the time where possible will be benchmarked against other films ‘in the same range’. The gross used for the older films will be either one’s I have computed or a BOI gross or a gross from Joginder’s column
2) Films currently playing – I will always do some trending analysis. This is always against the ‘week before’
3) To compute subsequent week grosses I will always benchmark against ‘the first week’. Before it was always the preceding week, but Week 1 is always the best base because it gives maximum centres to use
4) Going forward I will show ONE example in FULL and show the results of the remaining scenarios
New Releases
Mr White Mr Black
Its not surprising Mr White Mr Black took such a poor start at the box office and only racked up around 2.0-2.3Cr over the week. The film looked rather dated and the promos were quite un-inspiring. The film’s been flat out rejected.
Past Releases
Tashan
There was a glimmer of hope for Tashan in the past week. The added bonus of a multiplex release meant the film had a chance to stabilize in its second week but unfortunately the film has been rejected. A multiplex reprieve came too late to save its fate at the box office.
Tashan Week 2 vs Tashan Week 1
49% Mumbai means Tashan fell by 49% in Mumbai in Week 2
Mumbai 49%
Ahmedabad 62%
Jamnagar 59%
Delhi 61%
Noida 75%
Kaushambi 72%
Gurgaon 63%
Faridabad 92%
Aligarh 57%
Bareilly 40%
Agra 71%
Raipur 69%
Ujjain 60%
Sehore 48%
Aurangabad 35%
Trending
Week 2 drop = 59%
Considering prints in multiplex, an all-India fall of close to 60% is very significant. Mumbai is the only major centre showing any kind of resistance, but by in large from the small pool of reported centres, the majority have shown a steep decline in week two.
The Tashan Week 1 total for the above centres = 5.77Cr
The Tashan Week 2 total for the above centres = 2.34Cr
This means that Tashan’s Week 2 total is 41% of Tashan’s Week 1 total (2.34/5.77 = 41%)
Using my own Tashan Week 1 Total of 14.0-15.0Cr, the Tashan Week 2 Total = 41% * (14.0-15.0) = 5.7-6.1Cr
Tashan 2 Week Total = 14.0-15.0Cr(Week 1) + 5.7-6.1Cr(Week 2) = 19.7 – 21.1Cr
Verdict – Disaster
At the beginning of the year it would have been hard to imagine this to be the fate of Tashan. One of the year’s biggest movies has turned out to be one of the biggest commercial disasters of recent years. Of course there have been extenuating circumstances for such a low total, however the overall audience verdict is clear despite the numbers.
U Me Aur Hum
The fell hard it in its 4th week recording around 0.8-0.9Cr taking its total to 22.2-24.1Cr from India. The film is nothing more than below average at the box office.

Krazzy 4 too fell significantly in its 4th week. The comedy recorded around 0.2-0.3Cr taking its total to approx. 20.3-21.9Cr from India. The film is a below average performer aswell.

Good stuff as always Jay. Yes I must admit that Tashan has been the biggest shock for me this year. Looking at the film I’m not surprised because it isn’t the film we all expected it to be in terms of the kind of thing Acharya has done. But earlier I thought that it would make 50-55 crores if it were an underperformer. Yashraj have two huge disappointments in consecutive years. Last year JBJ was the big one from them, this year it’s Tashan and both were disasters. Of course they technically have RNBDJ this year as well though it’s really towards the end.

Good work!! much appreciated!!
Tashan will go down as one of the high profile flops from Yash Raj, one of the biggest disappointments in the history of Indian cinema.

Thanks guys…agree with both of you.

Good work. Am not at all glad, I was right about Tashan.
Next week, wait for the numbers of blockbuster Jimmy, from the talented son of Mithun who needs no push. May be Mithun can persuade B.Subhash to give him a film.

“Next week, wait for the numbers of blockbuster Jimmy”
ILG: You will be shocked when the numbers will come next week!!I had predicted 2-3 cr for Jimmy which i guess could go horribly wrong.even 2-3 laks looks difficult now.
Comment by akshay shah on 10 May 2008:
The reviews for JIMMY are worse than AAG and TASHAN!
