An Ardent Cinema Enthusiast!

In November 2006, Dhoom-II from Yash Raj Films got off to a bumper opening. Since then, most films churned out by the banner have been taking a beating at the turnstiles, except for Chak De India, and to some extent, Ta Ra Rum Pum. Most have failed to get even a decent opening.

All that was expected to change with their latest offering, Tashan. An ensemble star-cast which has been making all the right noises, attractive promos and a strong pre-release buzz were all signalling a good start.

However, reports from around the country are pointing towards a discouraging show, say experts. “It’s one of the weakest films coming from them,” says Taran Adarsh, editor, Trade Guide. “The film has got no opening and the feedback from those who have seen the film is very bad.”

If poor reviews and stiff competition from Indian Premier League (IPL) matches weren’t worry enough, the Chopras hit another snag— they have not been able to strike a deal with major multiplexes so far. “There is no compromise so far,” said film expert Vinod Mirani.

The Yash Raj banner, known for making love stories with big star casts, which cater to family audiences, has been experimenting with genres of late. Last year, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Laaga Chunari Main Daag and Aaja Nachle, all of them toplining some of the biggest names in the country were all given a cold shoulder by critics and audiences alike.

Their first film of 2008, Tashan, an action thriller, is being dubbed a film high on style, but lacking in content by experts.

While Yash Raj refused to comment, Taran Adarsh believes that another failure would dent the company’s image greatly. “You can’t really take the audience for granted,”
he says.

Trade expert Komal Nahata believes that it’s time for a serious rethink at Yash Raj Films. “They need to realise that they need to start giving some importance to quality too. Tashan fails to do that big time.”

It remains to be seen if the film can make a mark, in spite of a slow start.

It’s too early to make a prediction. But I think it will make more than 45 crores net and it will be an above average film.If the multiplex issue is resolved then the film would have had a much better opening.

Now that the Big 2(Taran and Komal) are in this mode, it will be impossible for Tashan to get the Average tag leave alone the hit tag.

They have made clear that they have not liked the film and they do not hope the film to sustain as well.

Their ego + the negative reacion splashed across the reviews, will nail the film.

Only savior may be the masses, but then does anyone care about their choice….at the end of the day, it is the money that matters and that now comes from multiplex. In fact many no shows at single screens (rejected by masses) have earned the hit tag recently. On the other hand no big budget film has done well only on the basis of single screens. The financial dynamics is loaded against Tashan.

The last only single-screen hit was vivaah (budget – 10 Cr). Of course welcome and partner were the kings at multiplexes as well as single screens. but I wonder if they would have scraped thru without multiplex earnings?

Nitesh:Tashan is definitely gonna suffer because of it not releasing at the multiplexes.maximum percentage of revenue comes from multiplexes these days and it is all most impossible for any big movie to recover its investment, forget about doing well without multiplexes.a small budgeted movie like Vivah can scarp through with the earnings from the single screens where it did exceptionally well not the biggies.again to do phenomenally well in the single screens and sustain over a long period of time, the movie must have a super strong WOM like what we saw with a Vivah.coming back to Tashan, I feel it will have a hard time to get going from Monday onwards. all these bad reviews, the audience reactions ranging from so-so to bad, the multiplex issue will harm it’s prospects at the BO.
