I promise somewhat irregular posts on (in no particular order) Indian politics, cinema, and anything else that catches my fancy... Why "Qalandar"? So-called "liminal" religious traditions are a particular interest of mine, and "qalandar" is the sort of untranslatable, ambiguous, yet enormously evocative word that for me touches upon and articulates the experience of the sub-continent's "little" traditions in a particularly memorable way...not to mention the fact that in popular lingo the word has more than a merely religious/spiritual connotation, and can mean a bunch of other things, including a smart alec, wannabe, what-have-you...

  7. Wow! Amazing, Q! They really are, especially the KP one. Wonder where one can these in India! I’d love to get that classic AB-Nirupa Roy-Shashi Kapoor one from Deewaar.

  8. FANTASTIC!

  9. Arun: try http://www.cafedreams.com (don’t worry about what’s listed on the site, just email them, they often have stuff available that’s not listed). Only problem is cafedreams is quite expensive, and on ebay there are a bunch of India-based sellers (I got a couple of original deewar posters using that route) who have better prices…

  10. Yeah Arun, the Kaala Pathar one is indeed outstanding…they don’t make posters like those anymore (indeed its instructive to see the contrast in styles between that and the Coolie poster)…

  11. Rvaibhai, really look forward to meeting you in NYC some day…look at all the lengths I am going to to tempt you to come here…

  12. That will be my pleasure to do so Q bhai, looking forward to that, should be sometime in the next few months.

  13. Q: thanks for posting. Awesome posters.
