My Apartment…
…or, what I consider the most important bits…

I promise somewhat irregular posts on (in no particular order) Indian politics, cinema, and anything else that catches my fancy... Why "Qalandar"? So-called "liminal" religious traditions are a particular interest of mine, and "qalandar" is the sort of untranslatable, ambiguous, yet enormously evocative word that for me touches upon and articulates the experience of the sub-continent's "little" traditions in a particularly memorable way...not to mention the fact that in popular lingo the word has more than a merely religious/spiritual connotation, and can mean a bunch of other things, including a smart alec, wannabe, what-have-you...

Comment by Arun on 16 April 2008:
Wow! Amazing, Q! They really are, especially the KP one. Wonder where one can these in India! I’d love to get that classic AB-Nirupa Roy-Shashi Kapoor one from Deewaar.
Comment by satyam on 16 April 2008:
FANTASTIC!
Comment by Qalandar on 16 April 2008:
Arun: try http://www.cafedreams.com (don’t worry about what’s listed on the site, just email them, they often have stuff available that’s not listed). Only problem is cafedreams is quite expensive, and on ebay there are a bunch of India-based sellers (I got a couple of original deewar posters using that route) who have better prices…
Comment by Qalandar on 16 April 2008:
Yeah Arun, the Kaala Pathar one is indeed outstanding…they don’t make posters like those anymore (indeed its instructive to see the contrast in styles between that and the Coolie poster)…
Comment by Qalandar on 16 April 2008:
Rvaibhai, really look forward to meeting you in NYC some day…look at all the lengths I am going to to tempt you to come here…
Comment by Ravi on 16 April 2008:
That will be my pleasure to do so Q bhai, looking forward to that, should be sometime in the next few months.
Comment by Mr. Bond on 16 April 2008:

Just checked the the pictures.
You just need a projector and screen, and your house would be a cinema hall. I am just thinking about, what would happen to your future ‘better half’
.
