The Village - Shyamlan classic

If you are one of those who belive in trusting reviews before you go and watch movies, there is every possibility in the world, that you have missed a fine movie by the name of, The Village.
Shyamlan shot into fame by a movie which definitely raised more hair on your body than any other movie did in a long long time, The sixth sense. This movie put him in the top bracket of film makers alright, but also gave a huge load of expectations and a responsibility to shake his audience in their boots, in the end of every movie. The Village does exactly that.
I have always believed that a good horror or a thriller, need not have some over to the top visual effects but some real haunting music, and a surprise factor by the director. We have had an example of bhoot, Raat, and even Kaun, to prove my point. The Village is again a movie which doesn’t rely on some gross make-up of Ramsays or Zee horror show, but a good timing and background score.
Movie starts in an Amish village, where peace, gentle laughter, obedience and love is the order of the day. These are the times hen there is no electricity, no cars, no TVs. People of this village follow the words of the elders, and do not question their authority. This village is surrounded by the woods and creatures living in those woods. There is a word of honor between these creatures and people of the village, that they won’t foray into each other’s boundaries, and will not celebrate color red.
But a young Lucius Hunt, Joaquinn Phoenix, does not believe in sitting quietly. He wants to see these creatures and find more about them. It is at this time when for some reason creatures of the woods gets upset by the people of the village, animals starts to get butchered, and a tragedy strikes this peaceful village. Lucius Hunt is hurt, he needs medicine, and no one can get the medicines from the other side of the woods, but one girl, who is blind. Ivvy, the blind girl, is first hurt by horrible accident of her love interest, then also she has to travel the forest, while encountering some unexpected dangers and angry creatures.
The movie captures your imagination from first scene and you on’t leave your seats till last. Some great acting, and cinematography keep you hooked. The location is so beautiful that even you won’t mind swapping your comfortable home, with all A/Cs, laptops and cars for this peaceful life.
Performance wise Bryce Dallas, stands tall as Ivvy, Joaquinn is as impressive as your expectations from him, and Adrian Broody, well he is perfect, simply perfect.
A rating of 4/5 and a recommendation from my side is all I can say.

Good write-up. Saw it when it was out on DVD and liked it inspite of underwhelming performace at BO.

nice review!
I did not like the movie and thought it was a very dissapointing attempt from someone who has made films like Sixth Sense(his best to date) and Signs in the past.

Nice review here Kunal…hoping to see a few more of these from you..
But I wouldn’t call this a classic by any means…IMO Shyamalan’s best 2 are SIXTH SENSE and UNBREAKABLE..nothing since has matched up.
