A question to Amitabh Bachhan fans
Why you hate Shahrukh Khan????
Just because he has been trying to do what Amitabh did???? but if thats the case you must also hate RGV, for ridiculing a legendary Amitabh movie. I think all Amitabh fans, and Shahrukh fans are too gullible, thats why they flow with the tabloids and begin lambasting the biggest stars of Indian cinema.
Come to think of it, there is no one better than Shahrukh-Amitabh combo, which can describe India. Classy, talented, humble, confident, intelligent, unafraid, risk takers and did I say SUPER SUCCESSFUL????
If you are pissed off because Shahrukh did Don, then I guess you should rather be proud, that still Amitabh’s movies do hold that kind of respect that they are worthy of making a remake. If you are pissed off because Shahrukh did KBC, then I must say that KBC lost its shine in the second half of 1st season only.
Amitabh-Shahrukh rivalry was/is something cooked up by media, and those who actually follow soccer, must be knowing how tabloids do operate, for rest, dude don’t trust a thing.
Whenever I have seen Aitabh or Shahrukh discussing each other, they have done so with utmost humility and regard to the other person, and if really there was a rift, why would Bachachans appear in OSO???? The best part is, when Jaya Bachachan talks about Shahrukh, she actually comes out as soething out of the world. She actually regards Shahrukh very highly, may be due to his personal life or something, she has always the best of words for Shahrukh, and even Shahrukh has always responded with similar respect.
The fact is, whosoever says anything stupid against any of these two legends, is doing so out of jealousy, nothing less nothing more. Else tell me who can argue against the achievements of these two across the globe. When Amitabh actually established himself as the first real superstar of the Indian cinema, Shahrukh actually took Indian cinema to the globe.
The fact is that without two of these super achievers, our Indian cinema would have been so much less that what it is. Not all of us might love them for various reasons, but at the very least we can respect them, for the kind of effort, achievement, and work they have done.
PS: don’t get misled by the title, its an argument which actually goes both ways.

Kunal,
I will take the bait.
I am a typical,vocal, diehard Amitabh fan.
I do not hte SRK. I JUST DONT HAPPEN TO THINK HIGHLY OF HIS ‘ACTING’ TALENT. And am even less enthusiastic about this chip he has on his shoulder of trying to be one up on Amitabh.
SOME SRK fans annoy me as they show a singualr lack of class but not all. Even those, I dont really hate. I hate Obama and people like him.

–Pretty much sums up how I feel! Hates a strong word…i’m actually quiet a fan of SRK’s older works(check out my BAAZIGAR review below)….but I think he’s very overrated on the whole….specially the latter half of his career…
A.Shah
Comment by akshay shah on 11 March 2008:
And I guess Bachchan fans have seen and experience “REAL mass PHENOMENON” with the Bachchan era….and for them the entire SRK era comes across as somewhat fake, and lesser on a grander scheme of things..
Like I said yesterday, it’s a generational thing..those who haven’t seen or experienced the Bachchan phenmenon…can’t really comment on it, and there get confused as the only yardstick they have is the SRK era….where he is NO DOUBT THE KING…but comparison toh hai hi nahin:)…
Star wise SRK is huge..no doubt..but AB was a star who could give the heaviest of heavys a run for their money where acting is concerned…and SRK is behind the 8 ball here in the latter half of his career..except an odd SWADES and CDI!
Comment by akshay shah on 11 March 2008:
I’ve said my 2 cents, will be repeating myself from the last few years as this is a done to death subject, so will let the other kids carry it on:) And again Welcome Kunal!
Comment by beld o beld on 11 March 2008:
Couldn’t disagree more with akshay on this. Why should one look at acting when you are looking at star power. I think srk is as big a phenomenon now as amitabh was with a subtle but big difference. Hero worship has undergone a sea change since the 70s. Srk has huge popularity now but its pretty fickle. Amitabh had like a rajni level of popularity
Comment by rks on 11 March 2008:
“popularity now but its pretty fickle”
Agree. It comes easily and it goes easily.
Comment by akshay shah on 11 March 2008:
Beld: I’m not denying SRK’s a HUGE force, no doubt he’s the biggest phenmenon since AB…and I guess the major pitfall is when it comes to comparisons….which is where most Bachchan fans (myself included) believe that the “star power” isn’t comparable as such simply because I don’t see a AB/Rajni type hysteria over SRK.
At times, i’ve even found SRK to be struggling a little in today’s time and age with the competition being so tough. But credit give where it’s due..he’s had a tremedous year in 07 and in the face of stiffest competition held his own with 2 dimaterically opposite films which are both HUGE grossers…

Welcome Kunal, nice thoughts but no point in commenting as it would be a waste of my time.

Comment by nithi_s on 11 March 2008:
Good topic Kunal. I agree that all ardent Amitabh admirers in NG are SRK haters and its not true in the reverse case. Coming to SRK haters, I think only Satyam, ILG, Ravi and rockstar belong to that odd category. Other criticize SRK occasionally or they are not bothered much.
ILG,
“OME SRK fans annoy me as they show a singualr lack of class but not all.”
Lack of Class??? Makes sense! Cause Amitabh Bachchan himself epitomizes a very fake image of Dignity or so-called class! Naturally his fans are mesmerised by it.
“I do not hte SRK. I JUST DONT HAPPEN TO THINK HIGHLY OF HIS ‘ACTING’ TALENT.” Oh really! What about the acting talents of Salman Khan? You go easy on him, somehow.
“And am even less enthusiastic about this chip he has on his shoulder of trying to be one up on Amitabh.”
Thats exactly what Kunal has been saying… Agree being pissed off with SRK’s guts to do KBC and Don?
I read one of Satyam’s post and I felt that much more than SRK’s supposed lack of talent its his attitude Satyam hates the most.
SRK haters hate the fact that today it is acceptable and even inspiring that an icon can be as much frankly arrogant, openly ambitious, be not bothered about the ‘rule of dignity’ and other ridiculous definitions of ‘Class’ as SRK as it is very much opposite to Amitabh’s image.
Comment by nithi_s on 11 March 2008:

For that matter all of Satyam’s analysis of SRK’s stardom in comparison with Amitabh, Aamir, Salman, Hrithik, Abhishek, Ranbir etc are ridiculous beyond description!

Common! What do these guys think?? Amitabh is some kind of unreachable Ivory tower that all should bow heads to! Why shouldn’t SRK think he is one up on Amitabh??? Cos, by doing so he has hurt the sentiments of poor old Amitabh fans? Absurd!
SRK is actually one up in this non-existent race. As it goes without saying SRK has bagged the ads that dominate the TV big time! Quite the reverse of last year, when Amitabh Bachchan was in every ad … Tch, Tch. Abhishek is still nowhere …
Comment by ILG on 12 March 2008:
Some SRK fans have made the point for me.
Comment by Mr. Bond on 12 March 2008:
Kunal, I am one Amitabh Bachcan fanatic who likes SRK - so I don’t fall in this category. I am sure there are more like that out there. My mother is a HUGE Amitabh and SRK fan. She can’t listen to any criticism against both.
Comment by Qalandar on 12 March 2008:
Yes Mr. Bond, I would say the same thing about a number of my female relatives, they are huge fans of both. I think there’s a gender angle here: in my experience males who are huge fans of SRK tend to be huge fans of Dilip Kumar and think Amitabh is a bit overrated, even if they think very highly of Amitabh. Conversely, those who think very highly of Amitabh as an actor and not just a star don’t think very highly of SRK. Since that’s just anecdotal from the folks around me, I’m not going to generalize and make some larger theory out of it, but that has been my experience where men are concerned, and I find it interesting to ponder what I’ve felt is a male/female divide on the issue.
Personally, I do not hate SRK, but I do believe he is a mediocre actor. I dislike some of his off-screen activities far more than anything on-screen. I do appreciate that he can be a charming screen presence, and his comfort level before the camera is something all actors should aspire to.
Comment by Ravi on 12 March 2008:
Nicely said Q bhai.
Comment by Kunal27 on 12 March 2008:
Rockstar I won’t comment on your post, because doing that would require me to cause more trouble to my neurons, than you ever did.
But a quick point, read the last line of my post again,
“PS: don’t get misled by the title, its an argument which actually goes both ways.” Now go to your school, if you go to any, and ask the meaning.
Anyhow, I would say see Nithi, or so many other girls for that matter, specially ones 25+ and you will see a pattern, these women have epitomized Shahrukh as no one has ever done. And the reason is that Shahrukh exceeded where Amitabh failed, or was not that successful, that was his family life.
And about arrogance and talent, I know I am very very old, thats why I remember people talking more or less the same while comparing Amitabh and Dilip Kumar, and Amitabh was very arrogant, it was after his ABCL crashed that he got some ground shaking reality.
Again I am one of those people who were big time Amitabh fans, but then we transferred to Shahrukh because both promised the same hard work, charisma, talent, and a guy next door feel.
If anyone thinks that Shahrukh’s phenomenon is any different than Amitabh’s than that guy, I guess is lying to himself. Fact is that India is divided like never before, the division is not only in culture, but language, way of carrying out, dressing up, aspirations, everything. And then there are just two people who actually bring this country together, they are Sachin Tendulkar and Shahrukh Khan.
I won’t compare Amitabh with Shahrukh right now, as it would be unfair to a great man, to be getting compared with a guy in his prime, when he himself is in his downhill mode. I don’t even think Amitabh ever planned to make a comeback, it was just that ABCL crashed, and AB never took off that he had to. But Amitabh in his glory was no different to Shahrukh, even Amitabh was accused of following a pattern, angry young man image, then comedy overdose, then his arrogance made quite a few headlines, not to mention him taking Doordarshan’s money for Miss Universe program I guess. The only difference was that Amitabh had a scandal, Shahrukh on the other hand is scot free, at least till now.
As such I totally agree with Beld, audience has undergone a seachange, now hero worshiping is left only for some south Indian movie stars, else we are not leaving Sachin alone, forget about Shahrukh Khan.
And Mr Bond I belong to similar family, thats why never understood the rage of Amitabh fans against Shahrukh and vice versa.
Again thanks alot for welcoming and your words on the topic, whether to agree or disagree.

who cares anyway? it’s simply a matter of personal preference and chemistry. we dig and don’t dig certain actors, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. i’m baffled and amused by the flamewars i sometimes see between srk & bachchan(that includes abhishek, also) fans. its puerile, distracting, irrelevant and completely pointless–no offense, folks…lol i personally like both amitabh and SRK. the former is a great actor and a enduring legend, the latter is a charismatic, charming superstar. case closed.

Where was Dignity when he was caught in a Political scam? The man made it appear a poor old innocent man being cheated by the Gandhi’s??? And people still continue respecting him?? And look at the Gold covered attire worn on his son’s marriage? Did that match with the humble image he projects outside? Thats my view of off-screen Amitabh Bachchan though I have enjoyed his movies quite a few times.
“everone here has to right to express his opionion , atleast noone is questioning someone’s hatred on abhishek again its personal preference and should be left on individuals only”
Did I question Satyam’s preference? Did I insult him? You consider this topic childish. I did consider Satyam’s ideas about Stardom ridiculous. How does this alone become an insult to Satyam?

Kunal27,
“Anyhow, I would say see Nithi, or so many other girls for that matter, specially ones 25+ and you will see a pattern, these women have epitomized Shahrukh as no one has ever done.”
I have not epitomized Shahrukh. I have watched SRK since Fauji. SRK kind of represented a much more dynamic on-screen personality which was quite interesting compared to the dull and impassive face of Amitabh Bachchan which I have being force fed since childhood.
( For that matter even a fan of any other younger actor of that time would have felt the same. ) Bachchan was boring. Alright, I liked Bachchan comedies, but then I got bored of his long, prim and proper speech like dialogue delivery. I can stand a minute of movies like ‘Major Saab’. I still don’t see any class in some of his supposed greatest work. All I see an impassive face mouthing some strong dialogues.
As far acting is concerned, I would agree with the criticism on SRK. I still don’t believe that he is a mediocre actor, though I have to admit that he is stuck with some irritating mannerisms which aggravate when incompetent directors are directing him.
Off-screen I find SRK more real than most stars. He may not be very classy but he isn’t artificial. He even admits feeling insecure etc … And yes, the ‘Rags to riches’ stories is always an inspiration.
Comment by akshay shah on 13 March 2008:
And then there are a few like Nithya…
” I still don’t see any class in some of his supposed greatest work. All I see an impassive face mouthing some strong dialogues”—guess theres gotta be one to keep the balance:) Even the most ardent disliker of Amitabh wouldn’t DENY him his right in his greatest works…
