It is very sad news. All of these assasinations and violence are beyond senseless. I think this will only cause more mayhem.

This has the potential of driving Pakistan into deeper troubles. I hope common sense prevails and there are no more violence; and election held as per schedule.

While I was never naive about what Bhutto represented this is still a very disturbing and tragic event and certainly the country seems to be in flames right now..

Aarohi, vaise mulk to ek hi tha, sirf tukde do bana diye gaye. Saath baras beet jaane ke baad, woh ek kaum, ek awaam ke jo do tukre kiye gaye, un dono tukdon ke beech ka itna zyaada faasla dekh kar behud ghum mehsoos hota hai.
Anyway, Bhutto was of my tribe, whatever her virtues or vices, I feel really sad.

It is very sad and shocking.

On a related note: I am really surprised by the number of high-profile assasinations in the Indian subcontinent. And, I keep wondering whether some group of nutjobs was responsible or a larger conspiracy was at work. There is no way to find out the truth.

There are nutjobs everywhere in the world. No politician is ever secure, rather its the security apparatus around a politician that ensures their life. There are no conspiracies, just plain and simple successful attempts.

India learnt its lesson long ago with Rajiv. Nowadays there are record amounts spent on security of VIPs in India. The way she was murdered is incredulous. There seems to have been no security prep on the venue, the routes, the cordon, etc. There is no doubt that her security was severely compromised.
Musharraf himself rarely comes out of his cantonment foxhole, but he didnt care a damn if she lives or dies.
Her whole family has been murdered, first father, then brothers and now her. Its shameful, barbaric…

Yes, based on the media reports so far, it definitely looks like the security was compromised. How is it possible that a ‘person’ with an AK 47 in hand gets close to the vehicle without getting intercepted.

with benazir butto’s tragic assassination, hopes of democratic change in pakistan now seems like a pipe dream. what a shame.

This is definitely a murky episode. The doctor examining the body has now claimed that there were no bullet marks on the body, just a big bump on the head. One of the ministers states that Al Qaeda is responsible (but of course!) and that she died after hitting her head hard on the sunroof!

Aditya: True to a certain degree. But she’s being made too much of a martyr to democracy by everyone from Gordon Brown to Manmohan Singh! As if it was all a selfless pursuit of power! The fact is that there is a void in her party now precisely because she upheld dynastic rule and was moreover quasi-dictatorial in terms of not allowing any heirs to develop. The PPP has always been run like a Bhutto family fiefdom and it was always more than a little ironic to see her ‘champion’ democracy in Pakistan when she couldn’t even do the same in her party! A very tragic incident no doubt and certainly the most dysfunctional democracy is still preferable to the best dictatorship (ask the Italians!).

“she died after hitting her head hard on the sunroof!”

That is some height of absurdity.[though people can die that way] Yesterday reports suggested that there was a bullet which went through her neck and came out from behind.

ps: I don’t discount the bomb theory because sniper would have killed her earlier not after she sat in car and she came out when the enthusiatic crowd waived at her {though that may have been the pattern at earlier meetings }.
