   Rocky: The Bachchans have enormous goodwill.. the problem has been Bachchan’s unwillingness to use his clout in the true sense.. power ‘dissipates’ if it’s not used and bachchan has given to many people the impression that they can get away with things.. a large part of power is really the psychological game.. people offered Bachchan roles that they would not have dared offer Akshay Kumar! There are some signs that things might be changing of late, principally because of some moves Abhishek’s been making..

   But yes much as there is goodwill (just about every top star currently owes something to Bachchan) there is also tremendous jealousy among some for the celebrity that the family represents..

   And this will remain the case until and unless Abhishek truly elevates to the topmost rungs of the ladder.. because when he’s successful but not really at the top (though always threatening to do so) is when he can really be targeted in the media.. so for example there’s been this move afoot in the second half of the year to ‘efface’ Guru.. But this is what the Bachchans are dealing with and will have to contend with looking forward..

   The other thing is that the Bachchans are not into this game of corrupting the media as many other top stars are (not Aamir notably) and as a result this also creates some ire on the other side.

   But the point to be remembered is that no one would spend so much time ‘dissing’ the bachchans if they didn’t matter! And of course all the anxieties center around Abhishek. Yes, he offers a softer target but he’s also the guy who’s in the mix with the other top stars. It all depends on Abhishek at this point. Bachchan is a transcendent legend but he isn’t competing with anyone at this point. This is why fans of other stars can safely call themselves bachchan fans!

   But wait for ‘08.. that’s all I’ll say at this point.. Abhi missed a golden chance for a one two punch this year with JBJ but it’s coming up again!

   but show me one article where abhishek has been targeted? to be frank – until i came to NG, i havent heard anyone diss abhishek as such. even here i suspect 90% of it is done more to irritate you bcoz you try to make abhishek into something he is not – at least as such. and to say abhishek is suffering bcoz of the bachchan name is ridiculous. no other actor would have got as many chances with huge banners with the kind of track record ab jr had. only in the last year or so – he is getting movies bcoz of the first name IMO

    Bollywood is made of star families and children following in their parents(grandparents) footsteps. No reason why Abhishek needs to be raked over the coals for his lineage.

    Abhishek is getting films because film makers obviously think he has talent, suits the role, and has some pull just like many other actors in the industry. I’m glad to see that the Bachchan’s not only had the support of each other during the loss but had support from their friends and colleagues in the industry and elsewhere.

    now Yes. a few years ago – no. which is fine too. nothing wrong in that.
    abhishek really got a following from Dus i believe when he started doing those rap numbers. he got roles as an actor probably after yuva – thats when his acting skills really came to the fore

    Belvedere: One is always impressed by the unsurpassable fairness of the SRK fan who only runs down Abhishek because he or she feels that Abhishek’s standing is being exaggerated by Satyam! It’s all done in the interests of full public disclosure, only done so that others here do not get fooled by Satyam’s insane claims and somehow start buying the idea that Abhishek is a major star.

    One is equally impressed when the same SRK fan also does his or her level best to run Aamir down or at least give him the raw end of the deal in all these debates. One is in fact more impressed when SRK’s track is compared favorably to bachchan’s

    But Abhishek is only coincidental. If Satyam didn’t talk so much about Abhishek there would be paeans of praise for him! That many of the same SRK fans slyly try to deconstruct Bachchan many times, do not have a word to say in his support, even as they’re otherwise counting the wrinkles on SRK’s face and trying to prove that Aamir has more, lends the whole enterprise just a little bit of doubt.

    I think I have the more plausible fiction. Satyam dares to utter, in fact even rubs it into everyone’s face, that Abhishek is a major star and could well sprint to the top, has been threatening to do so for a while, it is this that must be ‘repressed’ but which cannot be as long as Satyam is around, it is this that truly offends!

    Any star who poses a real danger to SRK’s enterprise whether it’s Abhishek or Aamir is always deconstructed by the SRK fan in all sorts of ways. Hrithik is least resisted which is why one can be sure that he does not disturb the system despite his obvious magnitude as a star.

    Much as the whole Bachchan family name or the Ash connection is used to repressed what is obvious. The structure here is that of a ‘royal family’ (the Bachchans at this point are closest to such a notion in the Indian mileu). To the extent that Abhishek profits from such a system he does so as a ‘crown prince’ or ‘heir apparent’ would (recall the India Today ‘Rising prince’ cover story in ‘05!). This is also a narrative that the media runs, this is the truth of the Sarkar franchise and so on.. it is precisely this obvious structure, this deep anxiety that governs all the very non-serious or even delusional statements on Abhishek.

    It is all such a massive complex that to suggest that one is simply setting things right because Satyam exaggerated defies plausibility.

    If Satyam were saying such nonsense there would be a lot more deconstructing him. But the folks who otherwise have great energy to attack and ridicule Abhishek all day long seem to lose it totally when it comes to arguing on substantive points. Then the whole mission of somehow restoring ‘fair and balanced news’ goes out of the window. Then a certain tiredness sets in. Satyam becomes simply illogical or someone who cannot be argued against!

    In my attackers I have often found many closet fans! Only something serious and plausible could attract so much rage or ridicule or resentment. My attackers know this. And all those here who obsess with Abhishek all day long know this as well.

    But of course I have never been under the illusion that there is some set of facts out there that convinces everyone!

    nobody is asking satyam not to make points here. he said because of the bachchan name abhishek is being targeted by media et al. so i am disagreeing to that coz i havent seen anyone talk ill of abhishek outside of NG. happy! i understand you want to support satyam – but yaar – kuch fact hona chahiye na?
