(Must add that Komal’s classifications are very harsh.
He believes that a movie should get profit not collections double of the investment and in each and every territory to be a hit, 250% to be superhit and 300% profit/distributors share* to be blockbuster)
* distributors share = Earnings after duducting all involved costs, based on profit sharing agreement with exhibitors/multiplexes/cinemas)

yes unlike others Komal classifies movies taking into considertaion the investment by the distributors.if a movie has been sold at 20 cr, then i guess the distributor’s share has to be the double i.e 40 cr to be called as a hit.so to have a distributor share of 40 cr a movie certainly needs to make 60-65 cr nett. at the end.

Tango: is that the reason why Komal has movies like RDB and KHNH as semi hits and LRM as superhits and Fanna as just a hit.

Yes Som that is true and you have about understood his ratings.
But without trying to confuse he calculates each territory/circuit seperately.
Say for a Bombay it may be 8 crores, Delhi-UP 6 cr 1 cr for Rajasthan etc. etc. , all adding up to say 20 cr.
Each territory must double up seperately as mostly disytribitors are differrent ( though in certain cases Delhi-UP , Bombay has the same like Eros & Yash Raj)
And there maybe further divisions !
Bombay has two distributors !!!

Tango:suppose a movie has been sold at 8 cr in Mumbai.it makes 20 cr at the end which will result in a distributor’s share of something around 12 cr i.e 150% of the selling price which is not enough to classify the movie as a HIT in that territory.i mean the distributor’s share has to be more than 16 cr for the movie to get a Hit tag.is that correct Tango?

“Som your Komal’s DON classification query has also been answered”
yes Tango, i had heard Komal saything the samething about film’s classification in Headlines Today about a year back.he always considers the distributor’s share, not the film’s collections at the end.

Som – Actually its Ashtavinayak in Saurashtra-Gujarat and Thane and Eros Multimedia in Bombay.
At one time there were plans to sell it to Ashtavinayakfor 9-10 cr , but Eros kept Bombay.
But that aside, Bombay territory is set for 15 cr plus distributors share.
Eros-Ashta also have some understanding for Thane.
