Om Shanti Om is a full on bandal film to the last frame Review Om Shanti Om – Bundle To The Very End.
As we were entering the cinema hall, a friend remarked “I don’t like Shah Rukh Khan. The man can’t act even if his life depended on it”. Before I could utter my wise words, another friend gave the most apt reply. She said, “In Shah Rukh Khan’s films no one is expected to act. They are only meant to entertain.” And so, true to my friend’s very words SRK’s latest production, Om Shanti Om makes no exception.
Frankly I was not very impressed with Farah Khan’s debut film, “Main Hoon Na”. And sad to say, her second film as a director falls couple of notches even bellow the first one. Now before I proceed, let me get one thing straight – I really like Farah Khan. Be it as a choreographer, a Bollywood personality and a Hindi Phillum buff. The woman is witty and has a wacky sense of humor which so severely lacks in our Mumbai Film Industry. But don’t know why in spite of all the above qualities she miserably fails as a film maker!
Agreed, spoofs of other movies require an added dosage of overacting but here we have the film maker, (pardon my Hindi) fucking hell doing maa behan of overacting. Making matters worse and among other countless flaws; the story plot appears to be rushed up, can’t understand if they are aping the 60s… the 70s or is it the 80s and the film’s climax is one of the worst I have seen in a very long time.
If you manage to survive the first phase, the 2nd phase is sure to shoot you down – the comedy (if one may call that) completely stinks, SRK miserably fails to pull-off the act of a young superstar, debutant Deepika is a stunner for sure but the woman is way-off the acting mark and what’s with her voice? Otherwise a fantastic actress, Kirron Kher literally gets on your nerves, not very surprisingly Arjun Rampal once again fails to leave a mark (and add to that a really bad make-up job) and the 6 pack song “Dard-E-Disco” would have been better off named “Dard-Lagta-Hai-Isko-Dekhko”. And no matter how loudly the director screams in disagreement; OSO is a miserable attempt at remaking yesteryear’s super hit film, Karz.
Talking of the few bright moments-
- Shreyas T alpade is the only sane one among the lot.
- The 31 stars item number is very well shot. Karisma looks hot and Shilpa, now is this woman sexy or whot?
- The Filmfare awards sequence is fantastic.
As for final words – Om Shanti Om is a full on bandal film to the last frame (barring the very few exceptions) but as my friend mentioned above it will surely entertain the Indian masses (here or overseas) simply because the word itself is very much adulterated these days.
Ps - Reading OSO reviews here, here and here, once again re-affirmed my belief that most things can be bought off so easily nowadays.

your Rs 2000. Of all the people Raja Sen liked the movie is little bit odd. Looks like youtr thought matches with Satyam on this one.

“Ps - Reading OSO reviews here, here and here, once again re-affirmed my belief that most things can be bought off so easily nowadays.”
This is such a presumptious statement. I liked OSO and gave it a good review (just like many others), does this mean we’ve been bought?
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
In any case, this ‘let-me-put-this friggin’-film-in-its-place’ sort of vengeful writing doesn’t qualify as a review in my books at least.
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
Thanks for the review Sakshi.

“Reading OSO reviews here, here and here, once again re-affirmed my belief that most things can be bought off so easily nowadays.”
such a disgraceful statement.i dont understand why some try to make some senseless inferences when their views dont match to others.if you dont like the movie, thats fine but atleast dont try to get judgemental of others who liked the movie.if every critics can be bought so easily and their views are biased, then i guess every producers will try to do that and get some glowing reviews for their films.it just does not work that way.if we cant take the critics as credible enough, then why would someone like to know our thoughts on movies as we are also humanbeings and can be biased too?
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
The bigger problem with most our critics in the media other then possible corruption, is that they can’t recognize a good film even if it smacked them in the head.
Comment by som on 11 November 2007:
“is that they can’t recognize a good film even if it smacked them in the head.”
but i never seen anyone complaining about and raising these issues relating to other big films.why is the credibillity of critics always underthe scanner when it comes to movies like CDI and OSO just becausse you did not like the movie?
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
I haven’t seen the movie Som, so I have no idea why you are pointing at me. The bigger question that needs to be asked is why is it that anybody who speaks ill about a SRK film is attacked?
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
“In any case, this ‘let-me-put-this friggin’-film-in-its-place’ sort of vengeful writing doesn’t qualify as a review in my books at least.”
No offense Sandy, but isn’t this EXACTLY what you do when it comes Mani Ratnam, MP, etc?
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
Jesse: No one is attacking anyone here. All we’re saying this is no review at all. Who attacked Akshay S when he gave a bad review to OSO? Who attacked Jha?
But anything that is put up for public consumption will come under a minimum scanner, especially when the piece itself has been written in such an off-hand manner.
Comment by som on 11 November 2007:
“I haven’t seen the movie Som, so I have no idea why you are pointing at me. The bigger question that needs to be asked is why is it that anybody who speaks ill about a SRK film is attacked?”
jeese:no i didn’t mean you.there are some who tries to question the credibility of the critics when they have liked a film of srk.i dont think same thing happens with other actor’s movies.did anyone say BR does not know how to review a film when he gave a very good review to JBJ which many disliked the movie?did anyone attack guys like Akshay, qalandar when they did not like OSO?i think one should talk about himself/herself rather than passing judgement on the credibility and honesty of others which Sakshi has done in her review.
Comment by som on 11 November 2007:
exactly sandy.our comments crossed.
Comment by abzee on 11 November 2007:
Say what you will about the review, but I just love that word ‘bandal’..such an authentic Mumbaiyya slang. I am reminded of the movie Idiocracy in which we are taken to a time in future where urban lingo is reduced only to slang and grunts and anybody who speaks normal proper English is beaten up for acting presumptious and being faggot-like. Hilarious!
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
Alright Sandy and Som. But I think you guys should have just ignored the review instead of posting such insulting comments given that Sakshi is a NG member. This doesn’t mean that she is free from criticism, but because she isn’t a regular poster (who didn’t even post this review) this sort of thing may turn her away from NG. I honestly feel that this sort of thing that we ALL (I find myself doing this far too often as well) do may be turning away potentially good new members.
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
“No offense Sandy, but isn’t this EXACTLY what you do when it comes Mani Ratnam, MP, etc?”
Jesse: This is downright slanderous! Show me one piece I have written as a post that makes such offhand statements. Please see my Mangal Pandey post and check the pains I have taken to present my points. Ditto Lajo, Ditto Mani Ratnam.

My integrity means everything to me and I have never indulged in such vengeful, hitting-below the belt criticism in any case. I may have been ferocious in my defence or criticism but never once have I done what you are accusing me of.
If you will bother yourself a bit to read teh above posts, you will see I have offered ample verifiable evidence for each of my points of criticism.
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
Jesse: In fact, I’m issuing an OPEN challenge to you to actually to go out there and find me one post that I have written which comes across even remotely as off-handed and vengeful as this.
Comment by Jesse on 11 November 2007:
Sandy: Comments like do hurt don’t they? Anyways, read above. I know fully well of your thoughts on both topics, but if I dismissed them just because I wasn’t fond of them the way you have dismissed this review, it wouldn’t be fair would it?
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
Jesse: They don’t hurt coming from you anymore.
Comment by sandy on 11 November 2007:
Anyway, for the others (Sameer, Beld), have been sincerely trying to take some time off and write the Saawariya review but seem to get distracted by such nonsense each time.

“Jesse: They don’t hurt coming from you anymore.”
Glad to know that!
Comment by Nitesh on 12 November 2007:
a different kind of review….and I for one did not think the movie was bundal but is was not good either. It was somewhere in betwwen…a one time dekho.
I however have absolutely no doubt that OSO will be a hit but then compared to other SRK’s masala film, OSO is below Main Hoon Naa.
For me Main hoon naa was the ultimate masala movie from SRK…
I liked SRK’s part in OSO but thought Farha Khan’s limitations were exposed when she was dealing with the reincarnation bit.
Sandy, you are the most vociferous supporter of OSO leaving behind Som and Beld….
Aisa bhi kya that OSO mein….???? Did you really enjoy OSO?
Your review and words seems to make OSO look better than even JWM….which in my opinion is far more entertaining along with Bhool Bhulaiya and Heyy Babyy.
Comment by beldevere on 12 November 2007:
jesse - whats with this bodyguard mentality.
when someone writes a review - its free for interpretation correct. i dont believe anyone is making any personal statement here but just critiquing the review. if people cant take criticism on what they write - then they shouldnt write.
Comment by Achilles on 12 November 2007:
GR8 Review Sakshi!
I finally caught OSO in theatres … and i agree with each and every word that u have put in!
A truly wonderful review … please ignore the banter of a few srk fans … when some abhi fans can make a gr8 movie out of JBJ … similarly all the OSO hungama makes sense too
heck even D2 was more entertaining than this so-called entertainer!
srk boss - please do some CDI type movies instead of hamming like there is no tomorrow!
Comment by beldevere on 12 November 2007:
>heck even D2 was more entertaining than this so-called entertainer!
spoken like a true hrithik roshan fan. I thought what little we saw of Dhoom 5 was better than D2…lol
whats with the Bold font ach - itna bura laga kya
Comment by Achilles on 12 November 2007:
beld bhai - m sure u wud been entertained more if hrithik was shown beside abhi and akshay to loose out to SRK … anyways i disliked OSO as much i liked CDI … so figure out the extent urself
Comment by beldevere on 12 November 2007:
lol - good retort Ach. but seriously, i think hrithik also in the awards category would have made that part even more hilarious. i thought ab jr did his best acting here ;-). he should have got that award….
i think you are the first after shetty who has disliked it here - if i am correct. most others like AShah and nitesh found it ok.
but i am disappointed with both you and shetty - how can you not like it with deeps looking so gorgeous. ek aur baar jaake dekh lo yaar.

Jesse - Thanks Sweetie but you know I actually don’t give a fart to what others think. When I write a review or more aptly, my thoughts on a film…I only think about myself. So yeah…others can go and take a doopaki in the samundar near SRK’s house, for all I care.
Abzee - You have no idea, it was such joy to use the word “bundal” after so long.

Hmm… Well, nothing wrong with this piece, maybe she really did find it ‘bandal’. If people can use ‘nonsensical crap’ then there’s no harm in using ‘bandal’ or whatever. The biggest flaw however, lies in the opening para itself…bias that is.And..I don’t see a re-view here in any case.

“are you on a ‘chaar dham’ ki yaatra or something? Why does Shetty garu keep asking you about Gangotri?”
Shetty gaaru nowadays have been hooked by Bhojpuri flicks off late even since he came to know about Sallu.
As I keep following its trend on Bhojpuri flicks, he regulary seeks an update.
Gangotri is the next bhojpuri blockbuster that stars Amitabh opposite his heroine(Salman in an esp appearance as salmani begum) and Katrina Kaif plays the role of Gangotri, who form the third triangle in this love stroy epic.
Comment by Sunny on 12 November 2007:

Aargh. This is far more worser than Heyy Babby comedy.
Comment by sakshi on 12 November 2007:
Beldevere - See, now its people like you who create not-desired-drama. I did not indulge in any name calling here (read the comment again), what I meant was (will break it down in simple words for ya)…

When I write on a film, I think only of my thoughts and not about how others would react to it. If I started doing so then I would be letting myself down and that too for some 3rd random person. One’s gotto be thick-skinned at least when it comes to the desi-blogging scene or else you will never achieve what you have set out for, in the first place.
And boss, I am a Salman Khan fan…believe me, I am thick-skinned.
Sunny - Well dude, I guess you are jumping in on your judgement here when you call my review “bias”. Agreed, I ain’t no SRK fan…but I thought he was really good in films like Swades, Devdas and more recently Chak De. The point is, if someone is good you can’t ignore that. And similarly if someone is crap, you can’t ignore that either.
Anywaz enough Bollywood dosage for the day..now I better get back to reality.
Comment by sakshi on 12 November 2007:
Oh…and I meant “desi-blogging scene” and not skin.
Rohit, damn you..at least let us edit our comments if not someone else’s posts. Sheekss!!
Comment by beldevere on 12 November 2007:
sakshi - i am a junior artiste here and my job is to create so-called not-desired drama. Bhaaago!!!! anyway, your points were clear in the first place but your choice of words were different. just answered sarcasm with sarcasm. you got every right to air your opinion.
so you are a salman fan - now whatever respect i had for you has vanished..lol. I hope you have a good sense of humor like shetty or you are as gorgeous as Deeps, coz those are the only factors that can salvage Salman fans
btw - where are you from?
Comment by Sunny on 12 November 2007:
Sakshi—when I used the term ‘bias’ it did’t mean anti-srk. But yeah, fans of other stars, apparently, have this kack of using the kind of language which you used when it comes to any SRK which CAN be criticized. You just said you’re a Salman Khan! fan….so does this statement, which in your opinion was true..”In Shah Rukh Khan’s films no one is expected to act. They are only meant to entertain.” hold any weight. It’s not so much dislike for SRK but the irritation of fact that he can get away with anything, while your favourite can’t…and it’s quite natural too. Not judging here, just putting my views forward.
Comment by Sunny on 12 November 2007:

Good point by Sunny. Its natural thing for a fan of a star or a hater of a star, to do set different standards for different actors.
Ideally at least in a site like NG, we need more movie buffs than crazy fans or crazy haters. But as always, NG reviews get skewed with celebrity obsessions and compulsions.
Comment by Sunny on 12 November 2007:
Nithya—chill pal
as you can see some of the very people who go ballistic in saying ‘the film should be critiqued on it’s merits’,'consider the pros and cons..etc etc.’ and blah blah have called this review excellent! So it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you when they ‘wah wah’ at other things. We just have to learn to accept this pseudo nature of things whenever an SRK film releases
