Let me be frank, I had always been a fan of England and Brazil soccer teams. But when England played Russia for an all important match to qualify for the Euro championships, I was praying badly for an England win. This team had all the potential (many superstars…), but in the end it did not matter. England lost and I felt sorry for the luck this side always has in crunch times. But when i started analyzing the match, i felt the best side won. Russia playing on their home turf (conditions tailor made for them), they produced a display that would have made Mr.Putin proud(who now-a-days seems to be busy in creating the cold war era again….with his love for nuclear missiles..damn him). In the end, what mattered the team that had their plans in place and acted accordingly won. England were short of ideas once Russia had the lead and were found wanting for most of the time. In this cruel sport, you must be prepared for adverse conditions and England for one moment i felt was short of raising up to face the conditions with gusto. Better luck next time.
Secondly, England had a second big disappointment in the form of their loss to South Africa in rugby finals. I never followed rugby, but having followed the news articles of BBC News all week, I followed this final game. After all how many times we see England playing in a world cup finals of any sport. South Africa (whom i sympathize as a nation for the subsequent bad luck they had in cricket world cups) produced an awesome display and it was like watching a team peaking at a right team. They deserved the win as they showed the level of consistency that no other team had done and in the end it mattered. The best team won and the second best team would be pondering over their ill fate till the next 4 years. Better luck England, but really i never expected you to come to the finals after your pre world cup campaign. Good show.
The best team and their best driver wins.
If there had been any sport, that caught my attention apart from cricket and soccer it has to be Formula one racing. When i started watching it, Michael Schumacher ruled the roost and I loved his style. But sometimes you feel sorry for the other drivers who were all competing with a leader who had a majestic aura around him. I became a Ferrari fan for life just because of Schumi. Suddenly he retires and a welcome breeze in the form of Lewis Hamilton arrives. To be frank, I was shocked at his performance in the first five races. He was just awesome and for a rookie to stand in the podium in all the races was awesome and I felt, a new champion has been born. Before the final race, he lead the other 2 competitors (Alonso and Raikkonen). But i rooted for the underdog..Raikkonen. All along the championship, Hamilton and Alonso shared cold vibes even though thy were in the same team of McLaren and I felt that really sucked.Hamilton received extra piece of cake from his team and Alonso fumed. Both were ego personified and it badly affected their relationship and their team’s prospects. In the end they did not function as a TEAM, and Raikkonen with the help of Mass (his team-mate) produced a display, every team should be proud of. In the end even though i felt sorry for Hamilton, it always had to be the best team and its best driver that is deserved to win the championship. Even though Hamilton was the best driver of McLaren, his team was not the best. Ferrari, for once again showed what TEAM wins.
In Raikkonen’s own words: “It is very difficult for me to explain in words what I am feeling at the moment: it is an incredible emotion… This has been a very nice year for me during which I have enjoyed Formula One like never before. In Ferrari, I have found a great family and I am proud to have won the title with them.” ….go Ferrari and its team spirit.
