This was a post I had written when Nagesh had just gotten a couple of films under his belt (now of course he is the part of Bollywood, albeit in his way and with his sensibility, in fact we almost have a Bollywood reaching out to him as opposed to vice versa) . Anyway read on:

Being a finance person for a living, I believe filmmakers are a bunch of folks who
love wasting resources. Just a little bit of smarts and you can make
a wonderful movie, for a pittance. But the key words here are “just a
little bit of smarts” which seems to be a challenge for most
filmmakers.

ENTER NAGESH KUKUNOOR,

This one time engineer, decides that the best way to learn the art
and science of filmmaking is not to waste hard earned money by
enrolling in some high flying film school (which anyway only makes
you an introspective fool who spends the rest of their lives making
shortfilms and documentaries) but decides to take short , one and two
day courses on films. He is not the only one doing this, institutes
like the Hollywood Film Institute churns out more filmmakers in their
two day course than all of USC and UCLA (at least so says their ad).
So having gained the confidence through these courses Nagesh decides
it is time to make his move.

REEMERGE NAGESH KOKUNOOR,

Everyday in my existence in the Western hemisphere, I come across
folks saying that it is so hard to raise money for films because NO
one is willing to take a chance on them. I go—-well include me in
those NO one’s, cause I don’t slog my backside off so that some
person who thinks his /her idea is the next big thing (that person is
proabbly the only one who thinks that anyway) goes and burns my hard
earned money off. The real creative one’s feel that money is the
least of the issues. So Nagesh, takes a risk ( I love that breed) and
self funds a movie starring himself and a few other novices and
decides to shoot the movie in Hyderabad (hence reducing costs). ALso
the story is hardly a story, more a satire based on a by weekly
vacation that a desi takes to his homeland.

AND HYDERABAD BLUES IS CREATED.

Rough, edgy, a very apparent first timer film, has nothing
going for it, yet it turns the movie world of Mumbai upside down. It
tuns for 31 WEEKS (!!!!!!!!!!…what’s going on, all the Dilip
Kumars, AB’s et all are getting an insecurity complex)-

WHO’s THATGUY.

At the same time a similar movie with bigger stars - Naseer,
Rahul , Tara is released– Bombay Boys, but does not do half as well.
WHO IS THAT GUY???

Once again history is repeating itself. An
outsider is pushing the envelope and getting away with it. Nothing
excites me more than seeing star sons/aspiring models/directors son,
plotting and politicking their carrier in Mumbai and the equation going totally out
of the window because a fresh thinking newcomer decides he/she is
going to take them head on and

LO BEHOLD SUCCEEDS ( I guess I
identify with them….what is he doing here…he is not supposed to
be here). Lanky Bacchan, TV actor Shahrukh, bubbly Zeinta, dusky
Bipasha, insightful Nagesh…are breaking every rule and making a
fool of all those who think they have it all figured out.

NAGESH COMES OF AGE THE INDIE MOVEMENT BEGINS

Despite claims by others, he is the origination of the Indie
movement. Now even old timers like Subhash Ghai are jumping on it.
Nagesh follows up HB with ROCKFORD. A coming of age story of a young
boy, that is what a coming of age story should be, not some
overweight AAMAJII, –Manisha “the drunk” Koirala, in a Shahilal”the
messed up” Nair, Ek Chooti Si ….Crap.

Unfortunately ROCKFORD does
not do that well (I thought the premise was good, but the story slow), but that does not deter
Nagesh, who then climbs into unchartered territory.Like GUDDI (Jaya
and Dharam) years ago, Bollywood Calling is a light hearted satire on
the workings of Bollywood and Om Puri plays a South Indian to
impeccable perfection.

BOLLYWOOD CALLING

So it seems since his next 3deewarein now goes full stream ahead with
Jackie, Naseer, Juhi (does she still act?) and Nagesh. UPDATE (since my original post)As if that is
not enough, he is now become someone whom Bollywood turns too, to get them out of the financial messes,(ahem a certain Iqbal, making up financially, for a certain Kisna, which was a financial disaster, for a certain Mukta Arts)

WHO IS THIS GUY_—– 6 MONTHS IN THE US 6 MONTHS IN INDIA—HIS
CONTEMPORARIES ENVY HIM AND BEHIND HIS BACK WANT TO BE IN HIS SHOES—
-OTHERS LIKE ME ARE IN AWE —HE DEFIES ALL THE ODDS AND ACTUALLY
EMERGES VICTOR—-
