Yup this is a poor number for sure. But this indicates not enough interest for this film. Consider this, JBJ had a marginally higher per screen average (455k off 83 screens) and that film was rejected. TRP opened to a somewhat lower per screen average (425k off 85 screens) and this also was not liked much at all in the US.
Needless to say these numbers are not at all in the zone of a RDB or Guru, also ‘different’ films. And certainly SRK has the overseas advantage, even if things are not the same anymore as I keep suggesting (Don managed to be on par with RDB, Guru, LRM, Fanaa with a much lower per screen average and by having 40% more screens or so).
By the way Lagaan six years ago opened to double the per screen average that was 40% or so higher.
Now one might say that sports films perhaps do not have as much of a market with SRK’s base. Fair enough. Except that hrithik seems to have scored much better with his sci-fi flicks, even though these also do not have much of a market. Krrish had a per screen average that was double (643k off 59 screens), i.e. compared to CDI.
There might be some hope for the film if the WOM is strong here as well. In this case there might not be much of a drop next week. But in any case the more important thing here is that Yashraj have had a really bad year in their crown jewel overseas markets and SRK himself has been lagging behind his major peers in more ways than one (other than in a super-production like KANK, which also had other stars).
The Indian situation might be different though because a sports film all said and done still has the element of novelty there. Plus there are the Independence Day holidays. But again the follow through will be crucial.
Well for any release in my friend circle, they would ask me “have you seen the movie”. This time no one bothered and I have to ask “did you see CDI”. Most of time they would ask how are the reviews (for CDI). I guess hype is low. But I think it will sustain better if no other releases in coming weeks. I agree with “India” in title, it is little no no for pakistani, bangladeshi and Srilankan crowd.
Thanks for that CK number Jay. That’s truly interesting specially since CK didn’t really attract much of a younger audience. This film had a 6800 per screen average off 51 screens. So there’s really no saving grace for CDI much as there wasn’t any for TRP and JBJ. But the second weekend could of course be better for the film as opposed to those two, especially JBJ which had a monumental drop!
rajen: I agree: I did manage to get two Pakistani friends to see CDI; one loved it; the other hated it (and wouldn’t have gone had we not made him come) and cursed me out.
the reason for lower numbers for chak de in the US is because
the movies were being played only 3 shows. Usually yash raj and srk films are played in bigger theater rooms but this time the capacity for the movie was around 50 people.
I watched it on Sat night in a small theater, and even that was only 70% full. Kaafila was sold out. Yes, you read that right. This is Canada folks, and the Sikh community will support Sunny Deol no matter what. Ammotje Mann is also quite popular here after Hawayein, which is one of the biggest hits ever in Canada.
KANK, last year, was sold out everywhere in the first week but it didn’t sustain because of WOM. But at least, everyone went to watch it at least once.
V-Z, a theater owner told me, recorded 7 straight houseful weekends. However, even this doesn’t come close to the kind of records that the said Hawayein and all Punjabi films starring Harbhajan Mann have set in Canada.
The exhibitor here in Minneapolis was wondering if he should bring CDI back for a consecutive weekend showing. THe past weekend when he had only 4 shows(1 on Friday, 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday) he did not have a single sold-out show. He’s hoping the WOM in India and elsewhere on the coasts reaches here so that he has a decent take-in. So far the figures reflect the trend here as well. Its a movie that needs to be seen so that more movies such as this can be attempted.
Henry: I am amazed with that Kaafila story! LOL! I wonder what the takings must be like in Vancouver in that case! I must admit I was mildly attracted to this movie seeing the Poseidon-like wave in the previews. But then better sense prevailed!
hmmm.. On Friday as i said here the turnout at the theater was lower than usual (Cheeni Kum was more packed than this), guess the WOM didnt spread fast enough over the weekend…too bad
this a very low total for a Shah Rukh Khan movie….it will interesting to see if the WOM helps the movie and to what extent..IMO CDI has a couple of weeks before Hey Baby hits the screens
“Kaafila was sold out. Yes, you read that right. This is Canada folks, and the Sikh community will support Sunny Deol no matter what. Ammotje Mann is also quite popular here after Hawayein, which is one of the biggest hits ever in Canada.”
Disagree Henry. With myself belonging to the Sikh community of Vancouver I could say with full confidence that Sunny is close to a non-factor here(actually he sort of is despised post JBSN). The audience is going in because it is a Amitoje Mann film. Plus the film has been promoted extremely well(they got posters on street lamps, multiple radio interviews in which Amitoje claimed that he has made “sensible” cinema, etc.).
If you need proof: Sunny’s Hero did 285k off of 23 screens back in 2003. Whereas in the same year Hawayein(no stars here) did 410k just off 5 screens just solely off a Punjabi audience!! And keep in mind that this was pre-JBSN.
Henry: by contrast, I saw it Sunday night in NYC, and there were 50-60 people in the theater for a 1015PM show, i.e. maybe 30-40% full. This is an excellent turnout for a late Sunday show given the next day is a working day etc., and was more than I expected.
a blow to CDI and SRK in plain and simple words… and unexpected for sure for me!
that number is indeed shocking, whatever the reason, and guess it shows not only the star metters, but also the theme… or maybe this star also matters no more??? but that we will realize with OSO and other forthcoming flicks..
i think maybe JBJ/TRRP being YRF duds this year also contributed to CDI bad opening, since CDI came from YRF also.. but thats just a thought, a may be!

One of the reasons for lower numbers is limited patronisation by non-Indian SRK fans.
