Ashfaque (Ajay Devgan) is a small town boy aspiring to be a film star in the Hindi film industry. He joins a street theatre group run by a reformed dacoit Sidhu (Pankaj Kapur) who uses street theatre as a medium to bring about an awakening in the masses. Ashfaque struggles to give a creative vent to the actor in him in order to realize his dreams.
Ashfaque’s determined struggle pays off and he gets a break in films. He gets a new screen name – Sameer Khan. With the passage of time, the roles start becoming better and he moves up the success ladder in a very short time. Soon, he becomes Sameer Khan the superstar – one who can enact any role with finesse, get under the skin of any and every character with ease and walk away with audience applause.
Sadly, amidst all adulation and applause, he slowly loses his own identity. He forgets his real self and imbibes all characteristics of the various roles essayed by him on screen. Corruption takes over his entire system, alienating him from all loved ones, including his wife Sneha (Vidya Balan).
A shocking incident at a party changes everything, rocking Sameer Khan’s lifestyle. He gets caught between his human self on one side and his corrupted superstar image on the other.
Whether the conflict within him gives way to good sense and whether he is able to discard his corrupted image and emerge as a true life hero, becomes an integral part of this true life cinema.

“one who can enact any role with finesse, get under the skin of any and every character with ease and walk away with audience applause.” sounds like Ajay himself;)!

All the elements: rags-to-riches story combined with “has success made me lose my soul?” not to mention Santoshi’s trademark social conscience! I have a feeling the shocking incident at the party is the real-life incident from a long time ago when a model was gang-raped by the sons of some bigwigs and were never brought to justice…
Must say that in these serious roles Devgan does have good screen presence, and his brooding persona leaves quite an impact. Khakee was not one of those, but I liked him in TLOBS, Zakhm, Company, and (an underrated masala pleasure from the late 1990s) Kachche Dhaage!

I love that whole soul/conscience angle. And yes, that will be the big shocking scene, and in many ways this is a combination of Santoshi’s own DAMINI merged with GHAYAL!!!!!
Like you said..has all the trappings of a masala film with a HEART AND SOUL!

Aaj mere janam din pe dil khush kar diya Ajay ki tareef karke! The Devgan-Santoshi combo is strong, I remember Devgans entry as the very massy Bulwa in LAJJA, from then on from TLOBS to KHAKEE they’ve made a great team(best Santoshi has had since Sunny).
HALLA BOL is a movie right up Devgans alley…this is what his hardcore fans want to see him do….
3 Names…SANTOSHI+KAPUR+DEVGAN!

Shahrukh in CDI, Khanna in GANDHI MY FATHER and Devgan in HALLA BOL are three performances to watch out for..

I also have a feeling this sort of film is going to be more Vidya Balan’s scene than something like SeI…I think Santoshi’s characterizations of female characters are more often than not strong ones (even in Khakee, the bit part that Jaya Prada got was likable and natural)…

CDI doesn’t sound like the kind of ROLE that would offer that much scope, I mean compared to Gandhi My Father and HB…I could be wrong on this one but that’s how I am reading the previews.

Agree, this will be a plum role for Vidya. She seemed out of place in SEI though endearing enough! I’m actually quiet keen to see her in HEYY BABYY too.
Jaya Pradha I have never liked, but she was pretty good in KHAKEE. I love that scene where Amitabh’s going through his photo album and says “in sab photo main mein to hu hi nahin”…its such a small moment, but Bachchans delivery and expressions says so much! Thing with Santoshi is, in amongst all the violence and mayhem, there is this rather soft and poignant touch which hits the right tone. Its liek GHATAK and the Amrish/Sunny “apne krodh ko paalna seekh beta”!
Agree that compared to HB and GMF, CDI doesnt sound like its in that league, but for years my one major grouch has been “SRK DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT DAMNIT” and this seemslike it after DON. This has to be the most promisign SRK film/role since SWADES IMO!

BTW I consider this a very “iconic” moment for SRK! Shimit Amin might not even make him do much here “acting” wise, but it looks like avery crowdpleasing, massy and iconic role. Iconic in the sense, SRK appears larger than life here…the beard…the name…his dialogues….i’m actually seriously hyped for a SRK film for the first time since SWADES!
