OK first let me warn everyone that I am a really ordinary and abrupt writer. But I thought if I never write about RDB I will never ever write about anything else. So here it is.
Let me start with ……… Man what a movie!! There are movies that entertain you, there are movies that move you, there are movies that inspire you and then there is a movie which Entertains, really moves and really inspires you. That’s RDB for me.
I just finishes watching it for the 3rd of 4th time and it manages to create the same impact every time if not more.
Even though I don’t 100% agree with the politics of the movie (In fact the first time I saw it I was sure that they were dreaming when they kill the defense minister) but when I look back I think it provides the shock value to the movies which I think was necessary. Woh kehte hai na,
India ko jaagne ke liye eak dhamake ki zarurat thi. So I feel to create the impact on the audience a big shock was needed.
The narration, the editing the character sketches was all so well done, and the music!! WOW! I have never had goose pimples on each and every song ever before. The songs fit into the movie and take the movie forward so well. The background music is what I thought was a bit experimental. Like during the freedom fighter flashes there was rock music!! Thus showing them is cool young rebels.
Which brings me to Aamir Khan! Man whats with this guy and his sense of selecting scripts lately. Will he ever go wrong from here?? Well only time will tell. But look at it this way, how many super stars do you know who would have done a movie where he knows he is going to spend equal screen times with four nobody’s (yes harsh word but who the hell were Siddhart – for hindi cinema, Kunal, Sharman and Soha before this movie). And that too after doing a Mangal Pande where he knows the box office result was not as good as what he wanted. I mean is there a bigger career risk then that?
People say that he thinks too much, he is too interfering, Some have said he does not like to take roles tat is not the most important one and that he is responsible for changing a certain cast in the movie. But man if his interference gives you a lagan or RDB then BRING IT ON MATE. Don’t think any of the directors will be complaining. And if RDB is any indication of how self centered he is then what can I say. How many times in the movie has he taken the back seat??  In most of his scenes with Siddharth he has taken the back seat, hell he does not even try and steal the thunder from Sharman and Atul who are character actors anyways!
Look at the climax ! the one who got the most out of the climax was Siddhart, and then all the other equally. Its only in the end that Aamir comes and makes an impact with his one liner!
He was responsible for getting Arjun Rampal out of the movie (Don’t know which role he was suppose too do) but HELL YES! Could he have done any of the characters??
Aamir IIMO just got two scenes which gave him the opportunity to sink his teeth in them and man does he make the most of them? First the one in the car with Sue where he is talking about how he has passed this college 5 years back and yet likes to live on the campus. Notice how he gets all emotional and then suddenly realizes what he is doing. Man how many times has it happened to every one? Just pouring your heart out under the influence of Alcohol?
The second was where he breaks down in front of sue, notice how he gets emotional – controls, again gets emotional – again controls, then bursts out – then again controls and bursts our again. All this while the first bite of food is in his mouth. He starts chewing it again after his break down.
Wich other guy apart for AB would have repeated “Arrey yeh toh Hindi samajti hai yaar†or what ever, just the right amount of time so as not to bore the audience.
AAmirs comic timing ! one of the best I have seen (Akshay Kumar are you listning?)
Which brings me to the small scenes in the movie which might be I am making too much out of but never the less they did some thing special for me. Most of them are humanly reactions so well captured.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Notice how Sue normally talks in Hindi but when she is really angry and having a rant she starts talking in English.
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Notice how when all the guys are attending the funeral of Maddy and they are all devastated. Atul is just behind them and he is less devastated (Possibly since he does not have that close of a bond with Maddy since he had met him only a few times), but when Siddhart breaks down he just puts his hand on the shoulders and pats it.
-        When the officers come to Vahida Rehemans (that’s her right?) house to leave Maddys suitcase she nearly faints, this is when Siddhart catches her and just kisses her on the back of her head.
-         Siddharts first line and last line is “Nautanki Saleâ€
-Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â In the end when Siddhart comes and says its over, and all start hugging Aamir first hugs Sharman, (In the whole movie IMO they sort of have a elder and younger brother relation ship, Aamir is always protecting him)
And lastly! A special thanks to hrithik roshan for refusing Siddharts role in the movie. Thank GOD for that. Other wise I would have never know such a good performer ever existed. Â
