All right,
Im back and fine! Kicking n rocking! Feeling on top
of the world (Phew). Sorry for tthe inconvenience you faced reading my
lines till now! (even though they are roughly two). Actually I was in
this condition coz I couldn’t get to go to the washroom at
the multiplex where I just came back after watching Tara rum pum.
Reason was its a Yashraj film…
Uff.. are baba – there were so many people standing in the queue to go
to the toilet during the interval. Such a big
crowd is expected at a
theatre screening a Yashraj film, isn’t it – especially if its just
recently released. I waited for my turn. It seemed like an eternity.
Finally I gave up and went back to take my seat. Coz the interval was
over.
Yeah, expect this always whenever you go to watch a movie under this
banner. Even if you have booked the tickets in advance, leave your
place half an hour at least even if the theatre is 10 minutes away, as parking can be full and you may
have to search for another place to park your vehicle. This situation
always arises at my favourite multiplex. No matter how horrible the
Yash Raj film is, you can be assured you may get entangled into a
parking mess
Some kaam ki baat (A starter): Enough of faltoo talk! We were talking about TRP or Tara rum pum (Gosh
its difficult to write all of it!). Its directed by Siddharth Anand,
the same guy who gave us Salaam Namaste a couple of years back. Though
it was easily forgotten, it also ranked among Yashraj’s hits that year.
With this latest offering, Siddharth has once again lived upto the parampara of
Yashraj – never spare a coming of age love story without packaging it
with so much gloss that even in the scenes showing the family with deep
financial crisis, kids and papa and mumma wear branded jeans and
shirts. Never compromise on clothes. Even if that involves surviving on
chapatis and rookhi sabzi.
Some kaam ki baat 2 (Critical analysis): Story is no great shakes here. Siddharth has his heart in the right
place, only if he could have spent some more focus on the main
storyline. Story seems to go in different tracks at the same time while
all it needed was a narration which follows a linear path . Instead it
follows a parabola/hyperbola type curves and arrives at the
predictable conclusion. If a straight line gets you to the path most
easily and qickly, why venture into all directions. Be mathematical
yaar, oops… I mean… what I mean here is – just be a good
storyteller.
Like his earlier film, Siddharth has once again handled the
sensitive/serious moments with skill, but has failed for the second
time in balancing the lighter moments . The first 45 minutes or so are
meant to be comical and light, but they are the worst part of the film.
Thats the period when you start opening your mouth to yawn, and
when you look back, you realize others are doing the same too. (Sam to
Sam, as Javed calls it). The film begins to gain pace and the attention
of the viewer only after RV’s near fatal accident.
And its from this point that the law of dimishing returns fail to affect your viewership, and you are hooked!
Yes, the film appears silly in many parts. Its illogical too – seems that the filmmaker adopted a chalta hai kind of attitude at the time of its making; and clumsily included the concept of Life is Beautful without focussing on whether it really suits the overall theme or no. But somehow it all seems to click with the viewer.
Some kaam ki baat 3 (Performances) : Talking about the lead actors, I don’t really know what made Saif and
Rani sign this film. Unlike the chemistry they shared in their earlier
film Humtum, there are absolutely no sparks here . Its absolutely
thanda. There’s no scope given to their relationship here; all you get
to see in the second half is Rani shouting at Saif over financial
matters. And the seasoned actors they are, Im sure they could have done
better than signing this film which could have been carried off by any
decent actors. They still seemed to be obsessed with working with
Yashraj. Rani especially must do something about her choice of films.
KANK, Baabul and now this wouldn’t do justice to her abilities. She is
competent here but the script doesn’t allow her to show her true
potential. And for heaven’s sake, can anyone tell the name of the
designer who created those horrible outfits for her in the first half?
He has made her look like a bhootni.
That made me wonder what kind of taste RV had in women. Maybe like he
was careless with money, the same way he was careless with women. He
desperately needed contact lenses before meeting Rani and falling on top of her.
Saif’s acts as a loverboy/metrosexual male in
Yashraj films are getting repetitive and predictable. Enough of
Yashraj, can anyone tell him to move on – or does he believe he doesn’t
have the potential to give hits outside YRF.
The best performance comes from Javed Jafferi . As a Gujarati
speaking team-manager,he was simply brilliant. Its sad to see this
multi-talented performer still not given good and regular roles in
films. Hope some film-makers take notice of him or he may end up
spending another decade of his life on the sets of Boogie Woogie
Some kaam ki baat 4 (Music): The music of the film was a complete surprise to me. I always
avoided its songs whenever they aired on those Music channels on TV or
on FM. But I absolutely adored watching all of them in theatre. Apart
from one or two songs, all are at least hummable with good
picturizations. A special mention to the title song with those lovely
special effects. The cartoon characters in Humtum were an irritating
obstacle to the pace of the film, but it was a treat watching this
family dance with those bears. Good work!
Conclusion :
The film does have too many flaws as I mentioned, but at
the end of the film, you end up feeling content and satisfied, if you
carry minimal expectations. There’s something about Bollywood films.
Perhaps it has to do
something with their length. Coz by the time the movie finishes, you
get used to the shortcomings as well. Ta ra rum pum is one such film.
Does seem like a sureshot success. A decent family outing!

My aunt saw this movie and said it was very bad.
Pranay: Thanks for the review.

Thanks Pranay for this review. Caught the movie myself yesterday !
I found the vast majority of it pretty lame, especially the ‘reality tv’ story…that was really lame.
I did think Saif, Rani and Javed did really good. Saif is getting a little stale in this type of get up but Rani (after a poor 2006) was much better here. Javed is the best thing about the movie IMO.
The sports angle was alright, it does fire you up now and then. I was pretty disappointed with the family portion though….far too lame for me, didn’t seem real at all and I didn’t buy into the ’so perfect’ family structure. The way the kids are portrayed as so naive and believe everything like the ‘reality tv’ thing.

Yep damn right ! In fact the whole story being told by the little girl is cringe ! Second half is much better IMO and thats why it might reach safety IMO but I can’t see this one being a hit.
BTW saw an 11pm show and the place was pretty packed. Expect good numbers from UK because they packed my local cinema with 15+ shows a day ! Reaction was very poor though, hardly any funny moments (moments that were meant to be funny were not !) and most of the story lacks soul. On the whole movie works in bits, you do want Saif to kick the other drivers ass in the end so thats a plus point !

Also I saw NL last weekend and NL is far better than this one in every way. In comparison with other similar YashRaj films from MDK, V-Z, Hum Tum, Salaam Nameste, BnB, Fanaa – this is probably the least appealing one along with MDK IMO.
‘Never compromise on clothes. Even if that involves surviving on
chapatis and rookhi sabzi.’
Hilarious – I thought this one aswell. YashRaj always make there stars look good but at no point did they look poor ! After reading this review again Pranay I agree with most of it.
Your probably right on Rani aswell, I didn’t mind her here but thats probably because I am comparing her to KANK or Baabul. Her wardrobe was a mixed bag here. She is a far better actress than this and so is Saif. There was no real standout scene for either let alone scenes.

Nice review Pranay… I saw it last night. I must say I found it quite terrible. The first half was atrocious, the second half much better but couldn’t quite make up for the first. I do agree with Jay that it works in bits. Some of the races, some of the comedy bits and so on.
Jay, I think the problem with Saif here was that he looked rather old for the part at many points. The performance was fine but it’s probably a bit late in the day for him to do the SN kind of routine.
Overall I was very surprised with this one. I honestly think this is the worst film Yashraj have made in some years. I am even more surprised that with this kind of subject they couldn’t fashion a better script.
The theater where I saw it didn’t have a crowd comparable to SN or HT. At the interval most people seemed unhappy, at the end a lot of people were smiling. So I think the second half did make up things for a lot of people, to what extent is I suppose questionable.

Thanks Satyam, how do you compare this with Anands previous film SN?

and yes, Jay is right.. for this film to sustain and be a hit Saif and Rani’s multiplex core will have to come through in a big way! I think Yashraj might be looking at their first major box office disappointment in a long time though I’d have to actually see it to believe it!
satyam 29 April 2007
05:36:18 am
Akshay, I actually enjoyed SN very much and saw it twice in fact. This is not even comparable to that. To be honest I never liked HT, unlike most other people, but even that one was far superior to this. To my mind they’ve just made a bad film. With a lot of other stuff Yashraj churn out one might call it stale or what have you but it’s enjoyable stuff for while it lasts. But this was a yawn.
satyam 29 April 2007
05:38:23 am
Agreed Jay, every one of those films was better than this one. In fact when MDK didn’t work at the box office I remember being quite surprised as it was a very solid film.
satyam 29 April 2007

I also saw the Metro preview, the film doesn’t look bad..
jayshah 29 April 2007
05:43:03 am
The film will be a test of Saif/Rani’s star power IMO.
Satyam – I think Saif looks pretty young still and he was ok here. But there wasn’t much for him to do in any sense. One of his best selling points is that he is good in comedy – here the script desserted him on that. Even Rani, the restaurant scene where she gets drunk was so lame ! She is really good in comedy (Bnb anyone?) but here I got a sense of a pretty poor script. Was that little boy the one in Fanaa ? He was so much better in Fanaa ! And that girl looks like a relation of the one in KKHH.
Agree this is one of the worst if not the worst YashRaj lovey dovey film in recent memory. MDK was poor but this one may trump it.
‘I am even more surprised that with this kind of subject they couldn’t fashion a better script.’
Yes. The basic skeleton of the film has quite alot of potential. But its not been harnested at all. There were a couple of big angles here – fighting spirit/sport angle and the overcoming life obstacles/being poor angle. Neither really did it for me though the former was probably better.
satyam 29 April 2007
06:01:37 am
I didn’t mean that he looked old, just not young enough perhaps to do the HT kind of routine (specially those bits with the atrocious wig et al, the sort of thing that might have been passable in HT). But yes I do think that he was let down in the worst possible way by the script. Even Rani had a few good moments in the second half. Saif did too in some ways but the film did not allow him to come into his own the way HT and SN did.
In general Yashraj went very wrong with this one. To be honest I have always detected this double move with Saif on their part where on the one hand the films were ‘edgier’ than the average SRK film on this terrain, on the the other hand they have also ‘infantilized’ Saif a bit. HT had those awful cartoons, this film had the animated song. SN was least problematic in this respect. In the initial audience reaction at indiafm you can see the children most happy with this one. I think it’s a terrible waste to use Saif in this sort of ‘Disney-fied’ subject. One of Saif’s strongest qualities (beside the comic timing) is his ability to suggest subversiveness in very normal genres. To date only EHT has really tapped this side of his persona but HT and SN still had him as a kind of ‘anti-hero’ of the genre for large bits. TRP really offers nothing in keeping with this sort of Saif persona. If one takes a sequence beginning with DCH and including KHNH, HT, SN this current film has the most tame Saif of all.
jayshah 29 April 2007
06:47:04 am
‘I think it’s a terrible waste to use Saif in this sort of ‘Disney-fied’ subject.’
Lol harsh but true ! On that run from DCH to TRRP, its probably the order I like the films in aswell !
jayshah 29 April 2007

On YashRaj I hope Rani, Saif and Priety haven’t fallen into the trap of picking the production house over script, director and all the other decision making reasons to take a film on. YashRaj can have tremendous pull but don’t want to be in a situation where you are bounded by them. They might be a big production house etc but they can turn out some real poor stuff now and then.
Children are liking this one ?

Pranay you wrote it yourself ?
What was the occupancy at the theatre ?
Pranay 29 April 2007
07:44:01 am
Thanks everyone for your comments. TRP was indeed silly if you look at the overall picture but this is what people like.Yashraj it seems never care to move with changing times. The only thing that changes in their films is fashion statements.
Tango – I wrote it myself. It was a fullhouse, being a weekend.
Btw yesterday my friend asked me to get tickets for him and his girlfriend as I was at the theatre then; and all shows of Sunday were sold out as well. This one seems like a metro success.
Tango 29 April 2007

OK , I like you style and thanks for the info. Delhi was better even on Friday.
I guess the Yash Raj banner will pull it through to success , despite the mixed start.
satyam 29 April 2007
09:01:05 am
Jay: check out the indiafm first report, all the kids there love it. The adults don’t seem as enthused.
Pranay: Saif’s Yashraj films are in any case metro successes only. So if this one turns out to be a metro success that’s all he needs. The idea that this film will fail totally must be ruled out because of the banner. the margin of success could be very limited though. Now if it goes on to become as much of a solid hit as did SN or HT when those films released I’d be really surprised. I think the film would have to do about 40 crores to compare with those earlier grosses. perhaps the 35-40 range will also be fine if it doesn’t open at 20 crores or over.
bollywhiz 29 April 2007
09:11:03 am
Satyam, this one needs(and probably will be) to be a bigger success than SN and HT. this movie is as massy as it can get for its genre. it pretty much appeals to all urban segments…kids, young couples, families plus racing fans out there and should be a big hit in the metros.I think Saif needs to be worried if this movie underperforms, he is one actor who is making a conscious effort to expand his audience over the last few years

my brother didn’t like it, and i doubt i will. i didn’t even like ‘hum tum’ which i’m guessing is better than this.
satyam 29 April 2007
12:21:27 pm
Yes that’s a fair point Bollywhiz. To be honest I initially thought this was Saif’s best chance of doing a 50 crore film precisely because of the racing theme. But then the film really looked poor based on the publicity campaign. And now watching it I’ve realised that they just messed up on a golden opportunity. And no one will regret it more than Saif who had his best chance to expand his base in terms of smaller markets. Of course if it’s an urban hit the way HT and SN were he will hardly complain but he must have expected more from this than the previous two films.
satyam 29 April 2007

Honestly the way the BO has gone for the majority of biggies I’d be surprised if this one gets past 30Cr. Purely going on some of the reports and my gut instinct after seeing it. But thats just a prediction – knowing how I am with these it might make 45Cr !
akshay shah 29 April 2007

Thanks Satyam, I think I might leave this one for DVD as planned earlier. I liked HT quiet a bit but couldnt stand SN much!
Pranay 29 April 2007
09:36:55 pm
Satyam – My instict says the family audiences are not really minding it. This one’s actually a very clean film (not even a smooch). Plus, the feel good factor may work for it.
It definitely looks like another success for Yashraj. Whether its bigger than SN/HT remains to be seen.
Thanks bollywhiz
akshay shah 29 April 2007
09:43:17 pm
If it’s a smaller success than HT and SN, it’ll be taking a step back IMO. The movie needs to gross a clean 40 crores to be declared a HIT. And you’re right that family audiences dont seem to be minding it much at all!!!

I’ve seen this in probably the same cinema in which jayshah saw it on friday aswell. absolutely packed house and much of the crowds enjoyed it.I personally liked it a lot and so did my wife which is not usual. She is pretty spot on with her predictions. she said eklavya was bad, though i liked it myself and the film just flopped.
I am sure this film will cross 40 crores. UK it already is a big hit i suspect. Cineworld(UK cinema chains) home page has 3 adverts. One of them is spiderman-3 and beside it is Tara Rum Pum. It has I think been well recieved.

TRP played in 15 shows a day only in ilford and feltham, but thats only cineworld, I’m sure it must have played in UGC, UCI, Boleyn, himalaya and other cinemas aswell. I saw it in feltham.friday night 9pm show

Tara Rum Pum will definitely be a similar hit like NL, not as big as Guru. Its sad, it may not be a 50cr grosser for saif, which i thought would have been possible before the film released. The film i think is not bad at all, as projected by satyam and it is definitely better than SN/HT IMHO. The main reason why I think it wont be so good is because of its first 45minutes as so aptly described by pranay and also the fact that racing is not exactly a sport which most of the Indians enjoy. well I got hooked to racing only after Lewis Hamilton started making all those podium finishes, but for a lay Indian I think motor racing is still not a great concept. If it clicks, which is possible because they are so very well done, unless the racing scenes in previous abbas-mastans films, the film will be a real winner and 50 cr is a possibility. Also with no big films in near future apart from cheeni-kum I think TRP has a good chance

I also was able to see the trailer of JBJ, which I think is a keenly anticipated movie on this forum….
My initial reaction was that film looks like a remake of humko deewana kar gaye. Preity plays the role of katrina and i think eventually she will be paired with abhishek and not bobby deol as we were made to believe with the initial snaps they have released. Also the cool look of abhishek in the wallpapers were deceptive aswell. I thought he played a bihari or UP guy settled in London, though his accent looked forced and unconvincing and the promo just didnt have enough gas. It was one of the worst promos to have come from YRF and I am afraid this film doesn’t look promising at all. I know it is blasphemous on NG to make such a comment on the newly wed aby baby, but ……

Madhu I saw the show after you in the same cinema on Saturday though ! Small world
Got to say I didn’t really like TRRP at all – the acting was fine but the script left a lot to be desired. Was there a good reaction in the cinema hall you sat in? In mine there was a fair bit of silence…….alot of people were concerned with whether SRL would beat Aus, loads of texts and calls …. I didn’t get the JBJ promo – thats sucks !
I dunno if the racing concept will play a big factor in success or failure – on NL……TRRP may gross more (quite possible) but NL I reckon will be viewed as a bigger audience hit.

You are free to air your opinions madhu (and welcome to NG!)…in any event let’s not exaggerate the number of abhishek fans6on the forum — by my count there are only 4-6…though I do note that Hritik, Sanjubaba, Salman and Akshay Kumar fans are generally underrepresented on this forum…

Satyam they didn’t show it ! I have seen it on the YashRaj website though and don’t really have much to say either way ! It’s kind of a neutral promo IMO, doesn’t really increase hype but doesn’t deflate it either.
