Bollywood beauty Rani Mukherjee , a storehouse of talent, turns 29 years of age on Wednesday, March 21.
Ten years ago when Rani Mukherjee acted in her first movie, an inconsequential ‘Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat’, hardly had anyone suspected the potential she had.
Despite coming from a filmi background (her father Ram Mukherjee was a director, and her maternal aunt Debashree Roy was a Bengali actress), Rani did not get success on a platter. She had to struggle and strive for every bit of fame.
Things began changing with the coming of ‘Ghulam’, (opposite Aamir Khan ). Her dusky, ethereal beauty and blue eyes made her perfectly suited to play the glamourous heroine in Hindi films. However, it took time for the filmmakers to accept her husky voice. Her dialogues in ‘Ghulam’ were dubbed. Even Karan Johar did not let her dub her own dialogues in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai .
But Rani was not to be bogged down. Since then, not only has she made her husky voice her asset, she has been continually rising on the ladder of fame in Bollywood. Today, she is among the top actresses in Hindi film industry.
Her most memorable performance till day is without doubt that of a blind, deaf and mute girl in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black . The filmmaker himself declared publicly in an award function that Rani, in his opinion, was “the best actress in the world”.
Today, Rani is working in some of the biggest projects in Bollywood. This year we will see her in two films being made under Yashraj Films: Siddharth Anand’s Tara Rum Pum and Pradeep Sarkar’s Laaga Chunari Mein Daag .
There have been reports recently that Rani may tie the knot soon. However, there has been no confirmation of this by the actress, as she doesn’t like discussing her personal life in media.
On Rani’s 29th birthday, TV channel Star Gold is paying a tribute to her with a number of her movies and a special show in which her old friends will speak about her and celebrate her birthday.

Happy Birthday to the ‘Queen Bee’ ! Barring 2006, Rani has been my favorite actress this side of the decade ! And her husky voice is definitely a great asset !

Only thing I do not like about her since her “Raja ki aayegi baraat” days. I call it “phata hua baans (bamboo)”.

Rani was my fave, but of late she has annoyed the HELL out of me, after BLACK and BNB she went downhill and fast!!!!!
Comment by Aditya on 21 March 2007:
she has blue eyes? really? i must be color-blind then…lol. i like rani, unlike the other mukherjee who can barely act(yes, i mean kajol!). while rani is obviously quite a talented actress, i feel she’s given more kudos than she deserves. she’s no konkona sen-sharma.

I think Black played a major major role in this. It hightened the spotlight on her an awful lot. If you take this out of her filmography it would make a big difference in the ‘kudos’ she gets IMO.

2004 and 2005 were very good to her as she had a bunch of great performances(Yuva, Black, BnB) along with some very good ones(HT, VZ, Paheli). TPP looks like it will continue this low phase of her career, but I feel that LCMD and Saanwaria will be ones to watch out for.

i didn’t find her performance in ‘bunty aur babli’ great. she actually annoyed me. i was wondering what happened 2 the actress i saw in ‘yuva’, ’saathiya’, etc. did she 4got how 2 cry?? i really thought her emotional scenes were disastrous.

LMCD: will be tough given Jaya Bachchan and Konkonna are there..she will need to be truly remarkable to shine here!
SAAWARIYA she will shine though its a supporting role.
She will also have a clean hit with TRPP! I loved her in YUVA and BLACK! as well as SAATHIYA. PAHELI was a nice performance too.

I’ll have to disagree Aditya on BnB. Rani in that film showed something that is very rare for actresses(not just in Indian films) and that is comic timing, that alone makes her performance in BnB great.

I agree with Jayshah here as I also think her voice is sexy. I fell in love with her when I first saw here in KKHH, but she has disappointed me in the last couple of movies.

I must admit I am more with Aditya on Rani in BnB. I loved her at many points but at others she was overacting, the crying bits etc. On the other hand she was great in the Taj mahal sequence for instance. I would say that her single best moment is Yuva. Black is the obvious showcase role for her but I just prefer Yuva.
