“will this be what our theatre schedules look like for the next few years: School, Hospital, Courtroom, Software, Restaurant? ”

Madhur Bhandarkar e-mail buddies cant stop raving about his efficient subject headers

Fantastic review Baradwaj! I have always considered Bhandarkar terribly overrated. But as you’ve pointed out one could at least where the ‘overrating’ and ‘hype’ was coming from with Chandni Bar. Since then his career has been a joke.

Thanks Satyam, but I do appear to be in the minority on this one… Shetty, didn’t quite get your comment. “Efficient subject headers”?

Nice review as always Baradwah! Like Satyam, I too find Bhandarkar overated, and has got himself into a glut with his “expose” films-in saying that I find his films a entertaining watch, but not that great from a critical viewpoint! Not much difference between him and other directors who rely on the same formula..just his are more realistic than others. CHANDNI BAR was fantastic, SATTA was brilliant, and a few notches below CB, PAGE 3 was good,CORPORATE was interesting in parts, boring in others(but the signs that he formula was lacking in some stories was showing).

TS looks interesting just for its milieu n setting

Satta was way better than Page 3 and Corporate. On the plus side I just loved watching Atul Kulkarni here, it was a marvellously understated performance. On the other hand Raveena just about ruined the film for me. With a better actress I would have liked it more though again there was nothing path breaking here.

I think that even serious Hindi films often go wrong with their understanding of politics. the idea of everything as a thug’s game can only take you so far. In this sense I really loved Hu Tu Tu which was a great ‘heart of darkness’ representation of the politics-corporate nexus. Gulzar though erred massively with his climax here. It was in a sense admitting defeat as a director. Unlike Dil Se where the ending makes a great deal of sense and is certainly potent at an emotional level, with Hu Tu Tu Gulzar just throws his hands up and decided on that particular conclusion.

I agree totally with you on SATTA! I thought Raveena was pretty good here, she infact impressed me with AKS, DARMIYAAN(now this movie is overrated), SHOOL and SATTA!

HU TU TU is a masterpiece in every sense! Taboo, Suashini, Nana and Suniel were outstanding to say the least as was the music
