Box Office Report-13th January 2006 16.00 IST
Guru – The film opens to a poor response of around 40-50%. Circuits like Mumbai and Mysore were better at 60%. The reports are mixed and it could do decent business in multiplexes of Mumbai and South but will struggle in other circuits.
Kudiyon Ka Hai Zamaana – DISASTER
Bhagam Bhag – A good third week of around 5.50 crore approx. HIT
Kabul Express – BELOW AVERAGE
Dhoom – BLOCKBUSTER
Vivah – Rock Steady. BLOCKBUSTER

One thing is certain now that the film did open on a lower note (around 50%-60%) given Taran, BOI and CNN-IBN reports. But one thing which seems strange here is that both Taran and CNN-IBN said the WOM is extremely positive, (infact Taran even said that the film boosted up 80%-90% in the evening shows) so i don’t quite get where BOI got “Mixed Reports” frm?!

Well, everyone I know, whether in India or in the US told me that the theaters were packed. I have also been following some TV channels and I got the same info that it is doing very good. As someone suggested, BOI always under reports for Bachchan movies (Sr or Jr). I guess he was right.

Khalnayak: it was the same way with Bhaagam Bhaag, where BOI said opening was around 60-65%, and then at the end of the week they said it had made 21 crores, which anyway you look at it is pretty darn good. Given even Don opened at 65% on the first day, I don’t think a 60-65% opening day for this sort of film would prove much (i.e. given BB, Don), but certainly if it went any lower, or if BOI’s 40-50% figure were accurate, then yes there would be a problem.

I just heard an executive from Adlabs (on TV) say that it was a blockbuster opening in India.

Yeah , let us wait for the numbers as that will make everything clear .
No one can put up imaginary numbers in the positive or negative direction .One can combine Bombay-Thane or vice-versa or omit or put up selective numbers .
But yet again , I will never trust this TA in either direction .

I saw it in a packed suburban theater in NY, Abzee saw it in a packed Bombay theater, Jay saw it in a 90% full theater in London. Sandy said it was pretty full in the morning show she saw it at. This would seem to indicate some kind of trending!
Of course the BOI trending is also more than clear! Every Bachchan film in some form or fashion is given a raw deal at their end. Anyone but a Bachchan is their motto!
By the way there awere other stories that suggested packed houses. See here (among the responses):

I am sure you are saying the truth Satyam , same with Sandy and Jay plus we have Akshayshah’s input .
I would not like to comment on anyone elses observations ( abt theater occupancy) spl after a few previous inputs abt certain previous releases of last year .
Even in my town in North India it opened quite well at the PVR , so rt now we can only wait .
For me the movie definately deserves to be a HIT .

I saw it in a packed house in Chicago. People actually clapped after the ending. The only other time I witnessed the clapping by Chicago audience at the end is RDB.

My show in Toronto was sold out too…in fact, there is more a lot more craze here for Guru than there was for Don.

And the night show here in the Twin Cities(Minneapolis-St.Paul) was sold out as well. We went for the evening show knowing the later show would be packed and that had the theater more than 1/2 full which was completely surprising. Our local exhibitor normally brings ONLY blockbusters ie typically big name releases and he told me UMRAO JAAN though it had big names hardly had anybody come to the theaters. Apparently enough people know about Mani Ratnam and the potential for him to combine with stars to provide a decent opening. In fact he increased the number of shows he was going to exhibit it for based on the WOM he has seen being generated on the Net. So the buzz is there for sure and its making its impact.

Q – Yeah correct as always , bade miyan( me) forgot the exact words
Henry – True , the overseas numbers for Guru are going to be real good and it will be interesting to see the final total as compared to some of the other recent releases in the Overseas .

I hate to play spoilsport here — since, for both Ratnam’s and then Abhishek’s sake I hope the film succeeds in a big way — but overseas grosses won’t tell us much about domestic ones. Remember that UJ had a pretty decent gross in the US, and in Dubai and elsewhere in the Gulf it seemed like it did quite well. But in India it was an epic disaster. I don’t think Guru is gonna go down that route, but my point is only that to use the audiences here as a guide is not very indicative. And that’s especially true (I would guess) in Toronto where there are a large number of Tamilians who may be expected to patronize a Ratnam movie come what may — so that segment of the market is obviously not there in (e.g.) North India.
Anyways, after seeing the film I have a good feeling about its commercial prospects (but then what do I know? I saw Dil Se 5 times in the cinema, so clearly I don’t have my finger on the pulse LOL)…

I saw it in a 70% full theatre and audience reaction was mixed.

I saw it in a sold out show in NZ, and the 11pm show was at 75% capacity on a Friday night!

Cticize: Thanks for the info at your end. I always value all the info you provide. Because the picture from some of the larger metros and overseas et al is more readily available. But I love to hear about attendance and crowd reaction from elsewhere.

A friend of mine got to attend the Guru NY premiere in Times Square (Ash, Abhishek, Mani, and the rest of the cast was present). He did not like it much, and said audience reaction was generally poor, and that even the cast left midway through (I note that last bit proves nothing, as they might well have had a plane to catch, not to mention that they’ve likely seen the film several times!). He added that at film’s end when Mani came out on the red carpet, some in the crowd started chanting that he should take SRK in his next film.
[The friend in question ranks Salman as his favorite actor, followed by SRK and Hritik.]

As for the show that I myself attended (6:45 PM show at The Imaginasian, a theater smaller than the Times Square ones), the show was sold out (as was the late night show). The audience was generally quiet, and I got the sense they were attentive to the film and keenly following it. Some lines drew appreciative laughs (Ash at the train station: “do teen sariyan bhi nahi le sakte?!”; the moment when Abhishek places the golf ball in the hole; Maddy cooking when Abhishek barges in); the Maddy-Vidya kiss drew a snigger or two at first (it began abruptly), but then people seemed to be taking it seriously as it went on. A middle-aged lady behind me seemed to identify so totally with Gurukant that she seemed to have worked herself into quite a temper at Mithun and Maddy, especially when she saw Motabhai in the hospital (she said audibly “bade kameenay hain ye log”– a dagger to my Maddymanic heart). Finally, some appreciative oohs and aahs when Ash requests that the inquiry commission conduct its proceedings in Hindi, and a smattering of claps — quickly suppressed — at the end of Abhishek’s speech. Loud laughs at his 30 second munaafa-line.

Abhishek’s brthr n law is played by Raj babbar’s son, Raj Babbar recently had lashed out at the Bachchan’s and Amar singh. He then acted in Bunty and Bubly and now this. I wonder how it must be to face each other after so much of ladai- jhagda.

Q: THATS THE EXACT Reaction from the audience here! The 30 second munaafa line has been treated with a thunderous applause and whistles, as has “naam tha nahin hai, aur rahega”!:-)
Also the entire “bed play fight” scene had audience support-the Ash/Abhi chemistry had IMMENSE crowd support….and unlike D2, it wasn’t just because they looked “pretty”

henry:
where’d you go to watch guru?
whe i did the 1.00pm show at sq. 1 it was a third full, which is great in my opinion considering the day and time(and comparably, don and umrao jaan had nowhere as many people on their first shows, maybe a handful compared to at least 40-50+ people for guru.
the 9.30 show at AMC in vaughn though was 80% full in my opinion, had it been sq. 1 or SIlvery city or albion/woodside it would have been a full house, but thanks to the number of seats available at interhange 30 there were seats available for all.
sidenote:
crowd reaction was great both times, and INO the toronto crowds almost always have their hands under their asses.

A comment on Baradwaj’s blog (by Karthik) says all shows in Bangalore are sold out until mid-next week.
