MUMBAI: Toronto mayor David Miller has invited Abhishek Bachchan and the rest of cast of Mani Ratnam’s Guru for the world premiere of the film in Canada.
The world premiere will be held in Toronto on 11 January 2007. Guru will achieve another first – it will be the first Indian film to be distributed by a Canadian distributor, Roger Nair Productions, the company behind the world premiere of Guru.
Guru is India’s first mainstream international premiere to be held in Canada. Says Miller, “This presentation represents a landmark event for the city of Toronto and all of Canada. That the makers would select our city is an indication of the high regard Indian filmmakers have for Toronto. This is an opportunity to bring Indian cinema to a larger appreciative audience and, at the same time, to further develop economic, creative and personal ties between our two countries.”
The premiere is expected to be attended by Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, R Madhavan, AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam at the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, where many Hollywood films are premiered.
Roger Nair Productions will kickstart the company’s initiative to distribute Indian films in to the mainstream international circuit and this year intends to release five more films after Guru in Canada, North America, Europe and the South Pacific.
The film opens in theatres Canadawide Cineplex, AMC and Empire on 12 January 2007.

I envy Henry. It seems clear that if one is outside India Toronto is the place to catch this one!
According to boxofficemojo, Guru will release on 70 screens. That’s a few more than KANK and D2, if I remember correctly.
It’s certainly more than D2 if the number is right. I believe KANK had a lot more screens than D2 though I could be wrong.
No need to envy me, Satyam. I am not going. The ticket price is one hundred dollars. I know for a premiere, that’s to be expected. However, it’s still too steep for me. To be frank, I wouldn’t pay that much even if the film starred SRK.
Anyway, I am certainly catching Guru this weekend, most likely Friday.
Even though I am not going, I love the fact that it’s premiering in my beloved Toronto. This is a great city with thousands of Bollywood fans, and it’s high time that more and more Bombay filmakers start taking notice of it.
I am not gonna say millions of fans cuz only Karan Johar can go that far-:)
Friday And Saturday for me…two different crowds..tickets already booked:-):-).
