Satyam

Bhagam Bhaag has fallen by about 45% or so in major centers which is not terrible given some of the adverse trade reports surrounding it. The film has about 30 crores in 2 weeks and more will more or less end up around PHP’s 40 crores. Had this been a better film it would have made significantly more than PHP. Overall the box office graph of this film is not too dissimilar to PHP’s. The drops are greater in major centers but because BB started off at a higher number just about everywhere the 2 week totals are approximately the same. PHP started off at 3.49 crores in Bombay and did a remarkable 2.8 crores in week 2. BB has done 2.2 crores in week 2 here but started off at 4.22 crores. In Delhi PHP had 1.18 crores as a week 1 number and did 1 crore in week 2, BB started off with 2.26 crores here and has gone on to make 1.26 crores in the second week. This is more or less the scenario across the board. Of course one expects BB to have these significant falls in the following weeks as well whereas PHP was always very stable in the key Bombay territory. BB has clearly not been liked as much as PHP but it will do as much or a little more as a pure gross matter.

D2 has remained very stable with 50 lakhs in Bombay in week 6 and 45 lakhs in Delhi. The really remarkable number here is the latter! Compared to this though LRM had a whopping 1 crore in Bombay and 37 lakhs in Delhi in the same week. Having said that the tax breaks had certainly kicked in for LRM by this point. Leaving aside the initial advantage D2 had over LRM which is offset to an extent by the latter’s tax breaks, the film has certainly kept pace with LRM and has outpaced just about everything else from last year. It is fairly clear now that this movie was embraced in a big way by the audience.

Vivah is also performing remarkably even at this point. It has doubled its Bombay total from 6 lakhs last week to 12 lakhs this week. Even elsewhere there is definitely a slight uptick. Contrary to my earlier skepticism about the film crossing 25 crores it is fair to state that the film will now do 30 crores and maybe more! One of the stunning success stories in recent times. The truth here is that prints have been increased every single week but this fact in itself is truly out of the ordinary.

Actually D2 and Vivah shatter a number of myths. The former with the biggest initial ever also managed to remain more stable than every other film (with the possible exception of LRM and even this is not entirely clear) shredding the myth that big films make their money in the initial run! Vivah on the other hand has repeated the HAHK formula. On a much smaller scale to be sure but in the age of cable TV (broadcasting films illegally soon after releases), pirates videos/DVDs, et al the result is nothing short of miraculous.

Kabul Express seems to have gone down to 50 lakhs in week 3 from 85 lakhs in week 2. This is a lower percentage drop than the incredible one in the second week. However I am a bit skeptical about the authenticity of the reported numbers. Delhi and Ahmedabad seem to have tripled their collections from last week, Pune had almost doubled its number. Given the disastrous drops in week 2 the print count could hardly have been increased for this movie. Nothing really explains how Delhi went from 2 lakhs to 6 lakhs, the same for Ahmedabad and so on. The film is still a flop with Bombay a safe bet for it if the numbers are right. But I find these hard to digest and I smell a rat!

Good that you added Thane for both as some may confuse as this is a rare occasion when they have seperated Thane from Bombay .

After week 2 it is a surefire hit in Bombay and nearing a hit in Delhi U.P.

Good for Akshay ( and off course Govinda)

Satyam – you’ve really got the right points everywhere here ! No point me doing my own piece this week – but will return when Guru hits the screens.

BB – well I am somewhat surprised and happy. Happy for the cast and especially ChiCHi, obviously he was supporting here but glad this venture will prove a solid comeback in terms of Box Office. Surprised because I felt the second half was atrocious and not funny at all ! But your saying 30Cr ? I guess these are your own numbers – BOI is reporting 21Cr Week 1 and 12 Cr Week 2; so 33Cr total is not bad at all ! It could get very close to PHP by end of Week 3 so possibly might end its run around 45Cr.

Vivah – amazing ! Its gross has gone up, according to BOI aswell. Taran is orgasmic, he is posting all the new cinemas it is showing in LOL
But I am glad you mentiond the release strategy. I think a few other films would benefit from such a release namely UJ. And in the future I’d also release a movie like Tare Zameen Par in similar fashion.

Dhoom 2 – the numbers are amazig here. The movie is baffling and defying odds week by week IMO. Honestly I’ve been waiting since Week 2 to see a major drop and am amazed at how its not managed to fall by more then 50% one week ! This one using BOI is heading for 85Cr !

    My statistic for the week.

    Week 2 onwards Total LRM – 49Cr
Week 2 onwards Total D2 – 47-48Cr and counting (using BOI)

Basically taking the 14Cr initial headstart out, D2 is practically neck and neck with LRM. For me this means D2 has held up extraordinaryily well. Plus this means the movie going public have really really LIKED this movie. A movie can’t sustain such numbers otherwise. Still maintain LRM has been LOVED/ADORED and is a more accepted movie.

Jayshah sorry to but in but I think Satyam’s numbers are are based on Indiafm reported total and BOI are right about the 21 total because Film Information reports 14.61 crores as opposed to Indiafm (Trade Guide) 12.81 crores .

As I have always been saying Film Info always reports many many more centres .

Jayshah , just to add week 2 (reported from Indiafm) is 7.25 crores , I am quite sure Film Information will be over 8 crores and so an 11.50 cr total looks quite possible as most prints have been retained .

Jay: Looking at Taran’s numbers I find a more than 20 crore gross unlikely for BB. But 20 or 21 does not change the overall picture much. If it continues to fall at the same rate it won’t make much more than PHP. If it is stable at some point it could get to 45 crores.

And yes, Taran weirdly separated Thane for BB for the first time (i.e. beginning with week 1). he’s never done this before. I add them up because he’s always done this in the past. Of course he now also puts in daily numbers for some films.

Now the wait begins for Guru.
How the movie does and who tries to spin it what way.
Be prepared for contested posts unless its an outright hit or flop!

Satyam both 20 & 21 are acceptable to me for week 1 of BB , but week 2 is definately over 11 crores by me .
